It seems every day I find something so basic that Android does, that Apple don't.

The question of the day, today, gentlemen and ladies - is how do you block unwanted calls on your iPhone?

I'm getting a bit fed up with these random junk calls, like: http://whocallsme.com/Phone-Number.aspx/2812170241

On my Android phone it is extremely simple - with my phone I simply mark a # as a call to be blocked, and it's done.

On the iPhone I've searched that you have to jailbreak it...which might be a nasty bit of business (especially if you want to stay up to date with the latest iOS features), especially just for such a basic feature, and then you have to buy an app that may or may not work all that well.

Any ideas smart people of NSX land? If this iPhone 4S was just a bit more open it might be the best phone in the universe. But as it is, I have to find ways to work around it, instead of with it...damn you Apple!!!

you either jailbreak, or if you have AT&T, you subscribe to a call blocking plan they offer for something like $5/month. No idea if other providers offer something similar. AFAIK there is no way to do it from a non-jailbroken phone without that sort of subscription.

Thank you, that was my conclusion too.

Another example of Droid Does, and Apple doesn't give a crap.

I have verizon and I can block calls by logging into my account online. I started getting calls from a number in Jamaica and complained to Verizon after which I found out I had to "activate" the free service of call/txt blocking but now I can do it on my own.

My iPhone is a work phone and as such I have no control / access to the account, so this option is out.

:frown:

Thanks for the info though. I do have the capability with my own Sprint account, but it has Android on it so no need to even log into the carrier to do that.

I would think your employer would do that for you with your carrier to avoid unwanted charges on your account (such as the repeated calls I received from jamaica). Never hurts to ask.

We have an extremely overworked admin who has no time for these things. I get 3-6 unwanted calls per day, each with a different #, so I would have to have the admin block each one individually, add it up for our entire company and it could be a full time job by itself. I just let it go to Voicemail but it is extremely annoying...

Just got another junk call while typing this: 503-468-5227

I love my Android that can do this with a flick of a button. And my landline that has a whitelist feature that only allows those # I authorize to ring it. I love my Android because it does everything I need it to, and my landline phone provider.

I dunno if you're just trying to compile a list of things that Android does that IOS doesn't, but there's really no point. There's a zillion of them. Apple is concerned with a select list of basic functionality and making the experience as smooth as possible. Android is more about allowing everything and anything and enabling users and developers to figure out what they want.

You guys know me, I'm a hard core techie. I used Windows based phones for years before I picked up an iPhone 3GS. I really WANTED to hate the iPhone.... but I can't. It's a great device for what it does. Mine is of course jailbroken, but it is what it is and you just have to accept that going in. About 6 months back I replaced my wife's RAZR with an iPhone4, she didn't really want it but now she can't live without it. I could have gone Android but for a non-techie like her, it was really a no brainer.

Basically you have two different OS that are geared toward two different mindsets. To me, it's like trying to compare apples and oranges. Neither is the best at everything, each has advantages in certain areas, you just have to decide which you can live with. For me, I'm still IOS 4.x on my 3GS. I haven't seen anything out there that makes me go I HAVE TO HAVE THAT, so I'll be using this for a while. It used to be I'd get a new phone the day something was released (IE, HTC Tilt, HTC Kaiser, etc).... sometimes the Samsung Galaxy S2 calls to me, but not that loudly.

Ironically I'm pretty much just like you Rob. It's just that every day I find something I can't do that I need to do, or would like to do, that I can't, on my iPad or iPhone or iPod Touch, much to my chagrin.

I too have an older jailbroken iPhone that I use as an iPod Touch...it has springboard crashes every time I power it on, runs super slow..so jailbreaking is not really a great option, but at least it is an option for some.

Android is not perfect, but I can make it do everything I need it to do. I'm impartial to phone platforms, but I do care very much about having features / functions that are productive and useful.

It sickens me when I visit Macrumors.org and hear the hype about how great this device is, and how nothing else can touch it...

Apple giveth and Apple taketh away too, which is almost intolerable. On the iPod Touch with iOS 5, there is no way to see or display the battery %. It used to be there on iOS 4...why is it not there on iOS 5? Just doesn't make sense. The fact it's a closed wall garden means you pretty much can't do crap with it.

End of the day I just want my devices to work, with some basic features that I think should be there. The fact almost every day I find some limitation or lack of capability on my Apple devices just irritates me.

When I see the unfettered Apple worship outside of Macrumors, I feel like people should be educated that there is a lot of hype, about these mythical devices that have a ton of basic flaws. As a long time user of Android and iOS, I know for a fact that Android is far superior to the iOS devices. I wish Apple would open up more, or at least be more competitive with its features. It just finally got a decent notification system for goodness sake. :(

PS Rob - get the Galaxy Nexus if you're on Verizon...I'm drooling at that phone. Ice Cream Sandwich OS is simply amazing, the best yet. These days when I see other people rocking an iPhone 4S like I do, I nod in kind sympathy, feeling a bit sorry for us both. Just like I used to when I saw my fellow co-workers carrying a BlackBerry, before we dumped that piece of junk.

Oh, and don't get me started on what a PIECE OF JUNK the iPhone calendar is. The Blackberry Calendar was light years ahead of the iPhone in that area...shockingly bad on the iPhone... *sigh*

It's pretty easy to compile a list of things that a certain device doesn't do or does poorly. This holds true for Android, iOS, BB OS, etc. Nothing is perfect, but every vendor is incrementally improving their product.

At the end of the day you need to decide what works for you and go with that. BlackBerry might suck for a lot of things but if you can't live without a tactile keyboard, then it's a no-brainer right?

If Android is perfect for you, it's unclear to me why you don't just switch?

I hate this about my iPhone too.

Anyway, as a workaround, I created a contacted called "Do Not Answer" and add new numbers to it as I find out what they are from whocallsme.com.

I'm not by my cell phone during the day, so I usually come back to lots of missed calls from solicitors of which I always google the number before calling...

I assume that one of the several call blocking apps that are available...

Call Avoider Pro

Call Block

...aren't acceptable?

LOL Jimbo - I'm not sure if you're serious or not.

If you read the reviews the apps are horrible, and simply do not work. Plus I have to pay $1.99 to find out that it's a piece of garbage app?

No thanks..

Thanks for trying though.

That's the problem with BB & iOS - the incremental improvements take far too long. A decent notification system finally came to iOS, after years of waiting. Android is eating everyone's lunch because it improves so much faster - hardware and software, plus it's open so you can have 3rd party vendors improving it rather than waiting for Apple.

I can't switch because it's a work / enterprise device. Not yet anyway.

I too have created a contact called SPAM. It seems to be the best way for now. Thanks.

Droid Does have a lot of exploits, so when Apple rolls out this feature they'll make sure to get it right...

And as far the phone number goes it's apparently:

this is the number one most reported company in the FCCs top 10 offender list. "Card Member Services" accounts for about 65% of all complaints made to the FCC and uses over 50 different number combination so there is no sense in blocking any single number. Do not answer when they call or they will call you on their whitelist and you'll see no end to telephone harassment.

it wouldn't make sense to block a single number (unless you've never answered their calls)

Disguising malware as a free version of a popular game (such as Cut the Rope and Assassin’s Creed) seems to be a popular tactic that the bad guys are using to scam users of Google’s Android Market app store. Overnight more malware appeared in Google’s official app repository.

And now this....

Owners of Samsung's Galaxy S smartphone and the 7-inch Galaxy Tab won't be getting the latest and greatest version of Android.

In a blog posting on a Korean promotional site run by Samsung, the company noted that the two devices would not receive the update to Android 4.0, the most up to date version of Google's mobile operating system.

The reason for that, as The Verge explains, centers around Samsung's use of additional software features on those phones, including TouchWiz, widgets, video calling and carrier software pack-ins. These suck up hardware resources to the point of giving users a less than desirable Android experience, Samsung says.

Sure to make things a bit complicated is that the Galaxy S is a close sibling of Samsung's recently-released Galaxy Nexus--at least on paper. That phone ships with Android 4.0, known more readily as Ice Cream Sandwich.

Announced in October, Ice Cream Sandwich adds a number of new features to devices on the platform, the main one being the unification of the OS for both tablets and smartphones, as well as the addition of software-based buttons that replace the ones that have been physical buttons. As with other major releases of Android, it carries with it particular hardware requirements, leaving a number of older devices stuck on certain versions indefinitely.

What iPhone do you have? I know iPhone 3G doesn't run as smooth if you jailbreak and start adding different tweaks, specially with iOS4. Also, there are different tools to jailbreak, not all are the same. Only time I had problems with any of my iPhones when jail breaking, was when I added video wallpaper/ringtones, slowed the iPhone 3G a lot. With the iPhone 4, I've had no problems at all. The untethered jailbreak was just released for iOS 5.0.1 btw.

I thought I was one of the few who is having this annoying problem. This past couple months it`s gotten worse. I get random texts with offers and annoyinig calls from 319 area code (IA, USA). I just thought the text were through bluetooth, but my bluetooth is never on.

Ive been an Apple person for nearly 8 years because of my profession (graphic designer). But Ive gotten a little annoyed with certain things, specially that they stopped supporting the Flash updates for my non-intel based G5.

Blocking text messages for AT&T is described here:

As for blocking unwanted phone calls, I think to truly block calls the carrier has to implement the block. If it's done only on the phone, it's incomplete. Otherwise, the call will go to voice mail and you will get a spammy recorded message anyway. Unfortunately, AT&T has call blocking, but they make you pay for it as robr said.
