how do i know which shocks are the front?

If I recall correctly, fronts should have brackets for the brake lines (or at least marks where the brackets used to go) and rears do not. (picture)

- look where the perches fit (how far from the bottom of the shock).
- I think they have the OEM part numbers on them, which you could enter into one of the web part services.

That's correct. The front shocks should have brackets for the brake lines or evidence of having brackets.
