It won't give you any performance benefit, so it's rather pointless.

If you want to change the sound and/or add horsepower, there are lots of aftermarket exhausts and headers to choose from, and you can leave the cats on.

It will sound a little deeper at idle, but not significantly louder. At WOT, it will sound very nice from outside the car, but still quiet within the cabin. I have an HKS exhaust which is not too much louder than the stock, and with the Tiatec straight pipes my car sounds aggressive, but not obnoxious like some of the race systems out there.

What you will notice is a lot more soot on your rear bumper due to the release of all the ehxaust released into the atmosphere. Other than that, I'm happy with my catless NSX.

errrrrr......... i also have an HKS exhaust with comptech test pipes, headers and airbox and it's pretty loud, but i havent heard any taitec's yet, just the usual ct, rm, b&b stuff that's been around for ages (the combo i have is louder than all of them, but the test pipes make a huge volume difference with the exhaust and headers). so perhaps its all relative, but i've been pulled over for loud exhaust (without driving agressively) and ive been black flagged at lime rock (granted, they have a pretty low dB allowance), but it can get pretty obnoxious over 6krpm. anyway that doesn't answer your question, i just thought docs comment was interesting considering it looks like he's running almost the same set up i am. but as noted, dont bother removing the cats if you're not doing any other mods.

Noise and performance issues aside, I was considering removing the cats as a weight savings measure. Any thoughts?

I removed my cats have DC Headers and a RM Exhaust and it is loud and yes the cats are heavy and so are the stock Headers. If your looking for weight savings take out the spare tire, bracket and tool kit.

looking here
http://www.nsxprime.com/FAQ/Performance/weightreduction.htm

the cats will save you 17lbs by replacing them with test pipes. you can lose an additional 56 lbs pulling the spare tire, tire mount, engine cover and tool kit.

aftermarket headers only lose you 8-10 lbs, the stock exhaust is 44lbs so there is some good room to lose weight there.

of course i've done everything above and then put on an equal amount of weight on myself, so much for that plan!
