HONDA says: NSX replacement to be VERY fast but rare ; ONLY 1,000/year US

Faster yet more expensive.......

When you make something rare and very fast.... it becomes a financial game to buy one. Something you can't buy without being best friends with the owner of the dealership?

Sort of like the GT40 because they made too few of them. Big Ford dealers who got a few cars, kept one for themselfs and sold the other to his best friend... or to the public at a silly mark-up over MSRP (not my idea of fun)

If you don't make enough cars, you end up with a collector car (Enzo) but not a drivers car that builds a critical mass of fans (10,000) to start web sites and car clubs that have enough people to keep activities going.

So are any of you glad they didn't build a HSC that might have sold in numbers, to produce another 15 years of clubs and groups like we saw with the NSX? Or are you happy we get, more of a Enzo, GT40 type distribution model, where they make a few cars, that don't bring in a drivers fan group large enough to amount to much activity.

In Florida I usually see a few Big Money guys buy one of each and then sit back with 30 exotics and not drive any of them! (This guy showed up in St Pete with one of everything. Brought 20 cars to the car show)

I think whoever wants one will be able to buy one, even with availability limited to 1,000 per year. If you want to be one of the first owners, then expect to pay a premium. However, if you are willing to wait a few months, you will be able to buy one at MSRP. Check out eBay - the premium for a GT-R has fallen from $50k to about $5k. Similarly, the premium for a ZR-1 has fallen from $30-40k to $10k. The premium on the R8 is also way down from several months ago.

Limited availability will help ensure that dealers aren't forced to mark-down the car below sticker, or force Honda to offer subsidized lease programs, as was done with the NSX. It will help the car maintain a high resale value. The market price of the Ford GT has held up very well due to its limited production. It think that this is a good strategy for Honda - it will make the car profitable (or much less of a loss leader) and maintain high resale value for its buyers.

I doubt in the current economy unless they had tooling already ordered and the plant was ready/everything was paid for - that they build it right now. It is going to be brutal for even the best car companies to survive the next several years and this is the wrong image and the wrong car at the wrong time.

JMHO.

You know, it's looking less ugly to me lately, but look at what they actually said.

It doesn't sound like they're going to so much limit production, but more like they don't anticipate too many people buying the thing. 'Expected sales,' sounds to me like they're just going to have a high enough price tag that less wealthy sports car buyers might go for a GT-R or a Corvette instead.

You may be right. However, I believe that cars in this price range are less affected by the ups and down of the economy.

1000 per year isn't rare at all, it's about 2x of the numbers of NSX sold in the US when averaged out over the entire production run.

I dont care how fast it goes. NOT INTERESTED!!!!!!!!!! looks like a nissan... I wouldn't buy it if they produced 50,000. The real NSX has a look like no other, why buy something just to say you have. Like one of the other earlier readings. The NSX has clubs, drives, NSXPO and mostly important a community. What will the new one have. A empty garage. Oh well I will feel sorry it just likethe Enzo and the GT40 but I guess all super cars have to go some where. The nsx will be missed! the mid engine will be missed! the look and style will be missed, what a shame. I hope they get crappy reviews and go back to the drawing board!

I agree that buyers in this price range aren't affected too much by the economy - Ferrari will still have a waiting list for years to come. But if this new NSX is money-losing proposition for Honda, that is another matter. Honda (along with every other car company) would be wise to not put a car into production if it loses money on every unit.

Search the web - the rumor mill is rampant that GM has killed the ZR-1 given that it is losing money on every unit. Even though the car is in production and shares the same line with the Z06, various reports are that GM loses money on every ZR-1 made. So damn the sunk costs - stop losing more money going forward.

Man is it just me or does it look a lot like the RSX?

Well it is just a rendering. Nobody knows for sure what the actual car will look like.

So let's say it's 10K more than a GTR is that that big a deal? I'd rather have a V10 from Honda ( damn I just like typing that:biggrin: ) and they say it's going to be extreme??? Has Honda ever said that before? Drool.

So Hondas going extreme with the performance rather than just competitive like they did with the NSX. Good times ahead folks!

10K wouldn't be bad, but I have a feeling its going to be closer to 30K+ more then a GTR.

I think you are right - at least $30k more. The 2005 NSX was basically $100k, so adjusting for inflation to 2011, that is nearly $120k. My guess is that it will be at least $50k more than the GT-R.

The question is, how much is a GTR going to be in 2011? And how much the Spec V is really going to be?

NSX went up about 5k per year in price since 1991 until 1997.

Don't be surprise if a base model GTR go for $90k when this car comes out.

Do you want a cow that weights 3800lbs or some thing much better built with aluminum chassis and NA power.

Not sure but I think people are over estimating. So far the only over priced Honda I know of in the Mugen SI:biggrin:

Uh no it was actually about 10k off from that and it was hand built. You guys seem to keep forgetting that this won't be hand built and that Honda is going to use some platform sharing with the next gen RL to cut the costs on this car.

I know that baby keeps going up! Plus I bet Honda won't have this problem with their car or treat you like this ..LOL

If THAT is the new car.... all I care about is a possible motor swap into my NSX. :-)

Come on man you know that's just a "rendering" might as well wait till the final product before passing judgement.
