Honda Challenge at Buttonwillow

The competitors:
1. Special Projects, debuting for the first time after missing the
season opener at California Speedway. They brought two identical looking integra. One is a brand new powered by K20a, and the other is the last year 2nd place finishing car with B20b frankenstein engine producing roughly 245HP at the wheel.. Driver of the K20 powered is Shawn Bota (#65), and the other is Jeff Owen (#66).

2. Varo Akopyan (#57), coming to BW after his dominating wins at
California Speedway. The car producing 226 HP on a dynapack and also powered by K20a.

3. Andy Hope (#1), returning with his last year championship winner car. His old CRX. The RSX that he is driving this year is in International Auto Salon in LA.

4. Ryan Flaherty/Robert Davis team (#28), Driving Michael Galati old Integra type R from World Challenge. The engine is detuned to use all Honda parts to meet Honda Challenge rule.

5. Jonathan Merris (#47), he supposedly ran in Wold Challenge local races. Hasn't shown a consistent run, bun shown he can turn a fast lap by sitting on pole on Saturday last month at California Speedway.

6. Andrie Hartanto (#68), EG6 with pretty much stock engine B18c. 185 HP tot he wheels and driving with pump gas. Drive the car to the track, and hope can drive it home without being stop by a cop.

7. Tom Lepper (#8), front runner in USTCC and about every race he competes in. H22 powered Accord. The accord is ex- European touring car.

8. Derek Stevens, Hondata co-owner. EG6 with also a K20a engine. He is the first guy who shown how capable the k20a engine at California speedway. Claimed the car has 255Hp on a dynapack. This translates about 240 HP at the wheel.

9. The rest of the field.
- Tsuyoshi Higashi, Endless sponsored team, EG6 with ITR engine (B18c).
- Dennis Caco, Tein sponsored team, EK9, with stock ITR engine.
- and a few others that I can't recall right now.

Saturday;
Early practice, I'm trying to get to speed. I haven't been to BW since OTC last year. And that was running in different configuration. Varo quickly shown how fast he can do by turning 2:07s. I was in 2:11s with the rest of front runners falling in between. Andy Hope is having problem with his car and didn't posted any time. Hondata surprised us with their huge wing. If you think Porsche have huge wings, it was nothing compares to this one. It is about 1.5 foot above his roof line, and it is huge. Too bad I didn't get to take the picture, but I might have it in one of my in car camera shot.

Qualifying,
The top 6 are: Jeff Owen took the pole with 2:09. Followed by
Robert Davis, Varo Akopyan, Shawn Bota, Andrie Hartanto with 2:10s, and Dennis Caco. This is what I expected I would stand considering the competition.

Race,
Robert Davis got a jump and lead onto T-1. Dennis Caco got a jump on me, so I dropped down to 6th place. I frustratedly trying to pass him as I watched the whole front runner getting further and further away. I finally got by him at Star Mazda turn and start my hunt toward the front pack. After a couple of laps, the top 5 are, Robert Davis, Varo Akopyan, Jeff Owen, Shawn Bota, and me. A couple more laps, Shawn and Jeff swapped place and I got closer. Jeff than lost it between Riverside and Lost Hills. I moved up to 4th position. The front runners are within looking distance but not close enough that we are not at the same pack. This goes on pretty much towards the whole race. Shawn's car broke last lap after lost hills. I was close enough to capitalize and took third position.

Sunday;
Morning practice,
Ryan Flaherty is driving #28 today. I was just trying to see if there is a place where I can improve. Everything flows better, as I got used to the track. I was driving sloppily yesterday.

Qualifying,
was cut short. I've only gotten 2 laps, and I was not giving all I got, since I was looking for a gap. But they black flagged the entire field, due to some cars broke down in dangerous places. Jonathan Merris surprisingly sits on the pole with 2:07s. Followed by Shawn Bota, Jeff Owen, Ryan Flaherty, Varo Akopyan, and Andy Hope. I sit in 7th, right behind Andy Hope. What a disappointing qualifying for me.

Race,
Merris maintain his position with Bota, Akopyan, and Flaherty. I managed to get by Hope and Owen to tail Flaherty at 5th position going into T-1. I tried to pressured Flaherty in the beginning hoping he will make a mistake. I finally got by him, when I got a run out of the esses. I started to put pressure on Akopyan and finally able to use the traffic to get by to third. I started to build a lead and try to catch the first 2 guys. But a yellow flag went up and this caused me to loose my lead. The hard fought battle ensued for the three of us, Flaherty, Akopyan and me. We swapped position for a few times. At the last corner, I tried to make a pass on Akopyan, but he squeezed me, and Flaherty took advantage passing me on the last corner. I ended in 5th position. Disappointing result, but it was a very fun/exciting race.

Great story and results Andrie .......

OK, I am declaring myslef to be Andrie's agent :p

And since Varo Akopyan seems to be his foremost competitor, as a compatriot, I am sure I can find a way with Varo to inch him out so Andrie can win fair and square :D

Do I hear of any sponsors out there ....? I know of a few decals that can be put on Andrie's new paint ;)

Good job Andrie. These are the kind of posts we need more of.

Somebody please sponsor this guy!

Excellent footage, it was a pleasure riding with you again.

The guy you were following for the first 1/3 of the race on 4/4 seemed pretty much all over the track and often on a different line than you. Was that just an attempt to keep you behind him or were his normal lines quite different than yours? I don't know the track but yours "felt" right from where I was sitting. I like that you aren't bashful about using the curbs either. I don't know about FWD cars but I find them very useful, sometimes just as extra track and other times to help kick the car around during an off-line inside pass.

Anyway, thanks for sharing.

Steve,
I'm assuming you mean the orange color Integra. That is driven by Ryan Flaherty, Galati's old car.
He is a very good driver. As why he took different line, I really have no idea. Maybe the way the car setup?

Hey Hrant,
Don't try the manipulate the zero.... :)
See you at Reno? I'm coming definitely. Never been there before, so I'm really excited.

Those videos must the be one of the best videos i've seen in a LONG time. ESPECIALLY since the server for that is like.. insanely fast. I got both those videos REALLY quick.

Thanks Andrie!

I'm surprised at the level of competitiveness when the cars vary by as much as 60whp! Are all the H1 hybrids running around the 2200lb min weight? I've seen you guys drive in person on the few events I've made it out to, and watching Andrie's vids are always awesome, so I know all of you guys are great drivers. It still baffles me tho how the level of competitiveness is maintained w/ such variance in power and pwr.

I believe the heaviest guys are at 2500 lbs, which is Jeff Owen. But at 245 HP at the wheel, his power to weight ratio is still better than mine.

Varo's car is at 2400 lbs, as well as Ryan Flaherty. Ryan's car is probably the closest in hp/weight ratio, as his made 196 whp. My car tip the scale at 2300 lbs. All the weight is including driver.

Varo's car easily pull on me on the straight. The winner of buttonwillow ran 203 whp on 2300 lbs car. Using built B16 motor.

I'm building a new car. This time it will be powered by k20a. Hopefully it will be done by July. I'm trying to shy away from built engine. Maintenance and cost are lots more expensive with built engine. The K20a motor will be totally stock.

awesome video-as usual. Thanks for the video. The K20 is a great motor for a hybrid. Gawd, I wish Lotus had put that engine in the Elise.

Damn, at 2500lbs and 245whp, that's way above you in power to weight ratio!...that's like a stock 911 going against a 911 GT3! Damn, everyone's running a K20A now...argh, I'm scared about my car now...it's gonna be on the podium for the list of most stolen cars soon just for the powertrain...yikes! Oh well. Hmm...your B18C makes 185whp...I don't know a lot of ITR or GSR B18C's making that much "stock"...and a stock K20A only makes about 170whp...do you mean "mostly stock"?:D How reliable would a Toda N2 setup be?...those have already shown to put down about 210-220+whp and should put you right on the butt of the Special Projects cars.
I'd like to get the old Lockwood Prelude (I like the prelude chassis) and compete in H1...but need more experience, funds, and time first.

p.s. I still haven't seen these latest vids...argh...damn this slow connection!

The mods to my engine is addition of Toda B cams and cam gear, ad valve springs. Nothing else. With the help of Hondata, we were able to tune it to 185 whp. The car, stock baseline was at 166 WHP. All this with running pump gas (91 octane). We did not see additional gain to run 100 octane. Of course we have headers, and intake as well. But that's just bolt on stuff.

We could build the motor to the rules by port polishing the head, use CTR pistons to raise the compression, and balance the bottom end. If we do this, we will get about 220 whp.

A stock K20a only makes 170whp. But you are forgetting, that is stock RSX-S motor. These people are running type R motor that makes 190 whp. With just tuning, hondata claimed to get as much as 255 HP on a dynapack.

On the k20, I would not touch any engine mods, and just runs it stock at first. 255hp on a dynapack is about 240 on a dynojet. Impressive!

Hmm, a 50whp jump w/ just tuning sounds too good to be true. I'm sure their "tuning" included I/H/E and cams. There isn't too much diff between the K20A and A2...cams (about a 10whp diff), pistons/compression (0.5pt), and a better flowing IM. I know the K20's are detuned, but that's way too detuned. Maybe it's true, but I haven't seen a single dyno showing a stock K20A putting out those numbers w/ just tuning. I haven't seen a K20A put out 240whp (dynojet) w/ a Toda top-end. The WC-TC DC5s make about 240-250whp, but they have some slight head "cleanup" and Motec along w/ the Toda setup. Eh, guess I'll just wait to see...but I've never seen those numbers from an internally stock K20A, so I'm a little sceptical. When do you plan to introduce your new car?

the new car still in pieces. Waiting for more sponsors to pull through. I'm hoping it should debut in July.

240-250whp from World Challenge RSX?? Who build that engine? They were getting that much HP from a world challenge spec B18s!

As far as the 50HP jump too good to be true, that is also the opinion of the other competitors. But at California Speedway, I can see him jump on the straightaway and passed me like I was standing still. 20 HP difference will not make that huge difference.

As far as the head port and polishing, I know a team that loss HP doing it.

I talked in length with Hondata. They claimed the engine has a lot of potential due to the i-vtec. It let them adjust the cams 50 degree. Honda really detune the car to produce low emission vehicle.

We will know for sure soon, once the car is done. In the mean time, if you know any potential sponsor, I don't mind a pointer :)

They claim they're making 260hp at the crank!...but I've been told by some of their privateer competitors that they're about 290hp at the crank, so about 250whp. Hondata would sell a ton more ECU reprograms if they would get 50whp from tuning alone. So far, the ECU reprograms they're selling make about 10whp if had a strong engine to start out with. I haven't seen that kind of jump in power from ecu tuning except from a big honking domestic V8. I'd like to see them dyno a stock k20a, then swap ecus, and show the 50whp gain...then I'll believe it. But, either way, the engine definitely has huge potential. Can't wait to see your new car. Hmm, not sure about sponsors. I don't even know anyone that gives me gas money to get to the track!...haha. Good luck!

Oh, ok...so something new, that's cool! Is the K-prog in the prototyping/testing stages right now? Sounds nice...wonder if it'll get released for general sale. I heard there's a 150lb weight penalty for anyone w/ a K-series for H1 now. Anxious to see your next track weapon!:)
