anyone here own one or ever used an HID Flashlight? I just ordered one today, its about the size of a D cell MagLite. I've seen other ones out there, but they were big and bulky. I will be using this at work.

dont feel bad, i couldnt find an ordering page either. I actually ordered mine from this page http://www.allenslaw.com/index.html

they are only taking phone orders at the time. the light is $285+shipping.

yeah its a lil expensive but its worth it to me. I was using a 20 led flashlight before, and it just wasnt cutting it.

I've been Googling and apparently there was a group buy at candlepowerforums.com but this website seems to have problems at the moment and the cached pages at Google have the price removed! I did run across allenslaw.com in my travels too. Thanks!

I've been looking at HID dive lights and the 10W Phantom is a really cool little product but costs a whopping $600.00

The Underwater Kinetics Light Cannon is a much more reasonable $160.00 at Leisure Pro. More info on it here.

yeah I saw the Underwater Kinetics flashlight, but the pistol grip design wasnt really what i was looking for, at least for work. Its a tad bit too bulky for me. I'll be moving around alot in our aircraft, so I'd rather have something more slim like the AE Powerlight. I might end up getting a UK flashlight also, price is very good.

Was $285 for the 24 Watt or 14 Watt model? Do you know the prices for both?

Thanks!

That was for the 24 Watt model.

LED's are nice, and the batteries last for ever, had one flashlight that I used the same batteries for almost a year, with almost daily(nightly) use. I dropped plenty times while working from the vertical stabilizer of a KC-130 A/C. they just dont put out as much light as I would like, and if you get the white LED's its hard to view certain colors.

Hugh, have you decided if you are gonna buy an HID flashlight? I checked UPS , and mine should arrive tomorrow.

HOLY S! $300 for a flash light? May I ask what in the world you need a flashlight like that for? The only 4 reasons I can think of having one are:

1. Cop
2. Fireman
3. Search and rescue
4. Nothing else better to do with $300

Pilot

Skyguy, I was just thinking, do commercial pilots do a walkaround inspection of the plane before takeoff?

I had a 20 led flashlight, and when looking at engine intakes/exhaust, A/C intakes,etc.. it wasnt as bright as I wanted it to be. I want to make damn sure I dont have FOD or birds building nests in/on my plane.

Yes, we are required to do a preflight and postflight inspection. A flashlight is a FAA required piece of equipment. They used to require "D" cell battery flashlights, but no more. Each airline has it's own flashlight requirements now.

*I use a a 8 LED light. Small and effective.

Skyguy:

Ok, yes PLEASE buy the $300 flash light if you are going to look over MY plane before we take off...in fact, maybe you should spend $400

NSXrebel:

Ok, I admit there have been times in the field when I could have used a better flashlight than my "moonbeam," but I couldn't justify $300 especially because I would have to put a red filter on it, which would just make me a big RED target.

Splitz, get with the times, we dont use red filters anymore. we have IR filters now. Moonbeam, hehe, cant forget about your ink sticks, scuttlebutt, BC's, the "head" ,etc..
