I thought the HEMI is only a rounded Piston head,

since the gas explodes in a 360 dirrection( circle )

that they cupped the piston head to allow full explosion in the chamber

but I may just be showing my ignorance

Close! The term HEMI refers to the hemi-spherical shape of the combustion chamber.
