Help with tail light problem

I started to get a tail lamp indicator inside my car yesterday. Upon checking, all bulbs look ok. But on braking, only the two outer lights and the led bar light on each side. The two lights closest to the reverse, both left and right, won't come on during braking. Only during lights "on".

Anyone run into this? It's a rather strange problem. I have to admit I did remove and re-install the tail lights a few weeks ago. Maybe a wire got pinched? I was just hoping someone had seen this before.

First thing I would try on one side is swap the inner & outer bulbs. If the inner brake light now works, its the bulb. Then try the same thing on the other side. If the center bulbs brake light function work in the outer positons, then you have a wiring problem.

I'm making the assumption that the '05 is like my '96 as far as using the same bulb in both postions.

Isn't your car acting perfectly normal?
The light nearest reverse is only a "running light" single filament bulb isn't it?
Thinking of my 91 so perhaps it's not working right either?

I never paid attention Jim and now I am confused. Can someone tell me what exactly lights up when you apply the brakes? The lamps closest to the reverse lights do not light. I swapped bulbs. I get the exact same thing.

4 bulbs should light up when you hit the brakes (at least on my 91) check videos.

The inner red lights are probably dual filament and the brighter filament must be burnt out.

We need someone to go to their NSX with a reliable friend to see what is happening, turn on the lights and see what rear bulbs come on.
Then step on the brakes and see what lights come on.
I'm traveling so can't do it. :)

Turbo, looks like its working fine.

Parking lights on

Brake lights on - only the outer 2 on each side should light up.

Thanks to Tangoman we've learned we have normal bulb action on our cars.
Who knew?
Jim

Ok that's what mine look like.... So why am I getting an indicator light? When I shut off the car and restart it goes away. Then after a bit of driving it lights up again. Maybe I should just change every bulb and see what happens.

Thank you tango man.

I'm learning something new. Does the 02+ have a bulb out indicator? If so have you put any LED's in recently?

Yes tail lamp out indicator under the hatch open indicator. No I have not done anything it is all stock.

Brake Lamp Indicator comes on when it detects a break in the circuit. Indicator gets reset when the car resets. One of your lamps is probably is going out intermittently.

I posted a by pass procedure on prime at some point. Doesn't work for everyone but seeing how you and I have the same year it should work just fine.

Why bypass it? The issue is I don't know which bulb they all look ok and seem to function fine. I will replace them all and see what happens.

On '95/'96 all 4 bulbs are dual filament, so all 4 bulbs light with braking. I don't have a '05 ETM or the little owners manual to check the bulb types.
All this speculation is curious - if you don't have the owners manual, all one has to do is remove the bulb and look at it and the socket. Two contacts in the socket or on the lamp means a dual filament bulb. One could also look at the bulb and cound the filaments, but that's slightly harder to do if one filament is burned out.

Are you saying the brake lights look different on various years?

We have 5 bulbs per side: 1 reverse; 1 running (single filament wedge) ; 2 brake (dual filament); 1 signal. I'm pretty sure that they're the same for all years.

Yes i recall those being the same for all years. (a side from the Honda's)
Take a quick look at your wiring running towards the plugs, damaged/cracked wires can result in tot earth/ground issues causing these kinds of oddity's

Also replacing the lights just to be sure they should be a couple of cents at the auto-parts store.

My indicator came on at some point...I cleaned the bulb connections with some steel wool and reinstalled haven't had the problem since. also, check the connection between wire harnesses near the tail lights...sometimes they get a little corrosion in them that will cause the indicator to light up.

Has anyone found a solution? My brake lamp just came on but when I restart the car it shuts back off. I have check the brake fluids and change out the bulbs but it still lights up. What is the the solution to this brake lamp light issue? Anymore suggestions?

Mine just went away on its own. Then I installed LED's so it came back. LOL.... now I have to try that green white wire trick. haven't had time.
