I may finally have found my car. The car is 1996 model w/ 19k miles, Blk/Blk, and in excellent condition. However, here is the catch. It was a theft recovery car.

The dealer is asking $46k, but also tells me that we can work out the deal due to its unclear title. What would be the fair price? I won't be keeping the car for more than 3 years.

Thanks for your help in advance.

I wouldn't buy it. If your intention is to resell it in three years, you'll want to find a car with a clear title. Pass on this one, keep looking.

Likewise, No ? about it, you will be better off trying to sell a clean title. Look @ some of the past posts on how people react when questionable VIN#'s turn up on this forum. The history w/records was the selling point for me and any educated buyer should want to know its past.

I agree. Here's another way of looking at it.

If you're buying a car with the intention of selling it in a relatively short period of time, it's paramount to buy it at a competitive price, so that you can resell for close to what you paid for it (or more!). The problem with a problem title is that the market value is difficult to determine. How much less will you be able to resell it for, compared with a similar car with a clean title? $2K? $10K? It's unclear, because there aren't very many such cars and they're difficult to sell (just like any "unusual" car, such as one that's heavily modded, or an automatic). So the value of the car is a crapshoot.

A problem title may be acceptable if you're going to keep the car for a long time and are buying it for your own enjoyment (and, of course, if you've verified that there are no mechanical or other serious problems with the car itself). But it's even less desirable if you're concerned about your ability to resell it in the near future.

Thanks guys!!

I am going to offer a ridiculous $ for that car, and will see. If they can't do it, I will keep looking!

Salvage title or theft recovery can be a problem as it is hard to get a loan on the car. If the car was stolen and not recovered within 30 days the insurance will pay you for the car and when it's recovered it will cloud the title. Even if the car was stored and not driven for 30 day and there is no damage. I would guess that the discount should be in the area of 30%, they can be good buys
