I just intalled Alpines MP3 CD changer and I am completely dissapointed. I brought an MP3 CD with me to test it at the shop and everything worked fine. Soon as I drove a couple miles down the road it began skipping so horribly that whole songs will be done in a matter of seconds. It got so bad I just turned on the radio.

I tried playing regular CDs and the skipping is just as bad. With my OG stock CD changer there was an annoying buzzing sound that would play intermittently in the background whenever I would go over even a slight bump. I don't hear the buzzing sound when I play the radio though.

I figured that would go away if I got the new CD changer but it's still there. I'm going back to the shop tomorrow morn to see what they can do. Does anyone have any suggestions as to whats goin' on?

BTW, I have the Koni/Eibach set up for my car set to the stiffest setting. Yet, despite this, my stock CD changer didn't skip nearly this much.

on the side of the alpine changers, there is a dampener adjustment for whether the changer is mounted horizontally or vertically. It looks like a quarter circle with tiny notches all along it. move the tiny metal piece to adjust for the angle of the CD changer mounting position (there is a dampener adjustment on both sides of the changer).

good luck, I hope this solves your problem.

I recently installed an Alpine MP3 unit in my 993TT and it works perfectly, it hasn't skipped at all and I was able to record in the 80 minute mode and put over 200 songs on a single CD. I believe the unit that you received has a laser that is misalligned, I would have them swap out the unit with a new one.

X-TNSIV is spot on. Check those settings... once it is set properly you won't have a problem. At least I hope not... it definitely sounds like that's the problem since it happened on two changers...

Okay guys..I will ask the install guy to make the adjusments. I believe you are both correct about the setting not being adjusted. However, there was no such adjusment setting on my OEM unit and it still made that buzzing noise if I went over bump.

Thanx for all your help.

I doubt the skipping is directly correlated to the buzzing noise. it sounds like it is two different issues.

try making the adjustment for the dampening and then try to locate the source of the buzzing (if you still get it afterwards)

good luck,

Does this mean that each song averaged only 24 seconds in length?

MP3's are compressed format so you can fit many more songs onto the "80 min" (per cda fromat) std disk storage space - means you can fit ~1000 songs on a 6-pack changer.

That is what makes the Alpine S634 such an attractive upgrade proprosition for the NSX - it will replace the stock changer & interface with the stock head unit (with the appropriate adapter cable) - you can then convert a whole catalog of cd's to mp3 on a pc with a CDR/W drive & some freeware software.
As has been reported elesewhere, you can then select the random feature on the stock head giving you a very much improved selection capability w/o having to change out the contents of the changer regularly. It will still also play regular CDA format also if desired, or a combo of mp3 based discs & CDA within the cassete magazine.
You would also be pleasantly satisfied with the quality of mp3 recording relative to cda.

The OEM's springs are internal and are not visible from the outside.

I know this does not apply in Florida, but I noticed that when it is very cold, I get some minor skipping over big bumps with the Alpine S634 (adjusted properly). Once the car sits in the sun for an hour or so, the problem goes away. There are some rubber bands in the suspension of the unit and I guess they get stiff when the temps go down. More of an obsevation than a complaint...the unit gives great sound and I am very happy.
