looking at a 91 nsx and the owner gives this number as the transmission # SR8M-5000072. I thought it would start with a "J". Thanks for any help and advise.

The format is typical. Not in the range. I have seen similiar numbers on a 1993 I once looked at. It may not be the original trans in the car. I cannot vouch 100% if this is a valid trans number, but it does seem like it to me.
It sounds like you have not seen the car yourself directly. Just make sure you do, or have it inspected by a qualified tech, before you put down $$$$$$.

You are in luck! You have found a 91 NSX that has done a 6-Speed transmission conversion. Assuming he has his part numbers correct, the 6-Speed is designated with the SR8M followed by the transmission number.
