Helmets for HPDE Event

Hi All,

I was wondering if helmets are required for HPDE event? If yes, are there any available for rent at the track? I have one but may not have enough luggage space.

Thank you,

Sam

Helmets are mandatory and generally are not available for rental at tracks (no track would want to take on the potential liability if there was an accident and the driver alleged they were given a defective helmet). You could try to borrow a friend's helmet at the track but this would not be recommended unless you are the exact same size (as well as in different run groups) and then as a courtesy you should wear a head sock.

You can always ship yours to/from the hotel via UPS, etc.

The club has a limited supply of loaner helmets available at the NSXPO track event.

check for bed bugs..oh and don't breath through your nose:tongue:

I was thinking of just wrapping the helmets with a lot of cushion, and stuff it inside the spare tire compartment under the hood. Think it'll get too hot? :)

don't laugh but we actualy got a small wheeled carry bag in the front compartment(of course removing the spare) just make sure nothing will get cought up in the radiator fan...

There are some problems with renting, borrowing and loaning helmets; have they have been properly cared for and how do they fit.
I understand that helmets are delicate and their function deteriorates if they have been dropped.
Are motorcycle helmets acceptable at the event?

Lance

I would imagine that DOT or Snell approved helmets would be sufficient. But i am new to this, so if I am wrong, someone please correct me. I am bringing my motorcycle helmet.

I was trying to find out the same information. I have a full face Snell M2010 helmet and was told it not acceptable. I was told to got to saferacer.com and order a race helmet from there. So, I go to that site and look under car race helmets and there is the exact helmet I have which I have been told is not acceptable. I use this exact helmet at my local autocross events, and local road race course. So, in the end I decided not to go to HPDE.

I'm surprised you would make that decision before we have an official statement from those in charge of the NSXPO 2010 track event whether or not motorcycle-rated helmets are acceptable.

NSXCA's policy is to require SA-2000 or later rated helmets. The key difference between the SA and M ratings is in the area of fire retardancy and certain impact testing. See this page for more information:
http://www.nsxprime.com/FAQ/Track/helmet.htm

To my knowledge, M-rated helmets have never been accepted for use at NSXpo. As stated, there are a limited number of loaner helmets available and there may be other drivers that would be willing to help you out. IOW, that seems like a pretty insignificant reason on which to base your decision on whether or not to attend.

In the meantime, let me consult with the organizers; I'll post again if there is a change in the policy.

Bruce is correct on every point. I have never seen motorcycle helmets allowed in non-motorcycle track events at SMMR. Snell SA-2000 (or better) is a universally accepted minimum requirement for helmets being used in non-motorcycle track events.

This is definitely bad news. I don't recall a warning about this when I registered for the HPDE but I may have missed it. I have claustraphobia with full face helmets .. are there going to be any open face loaner ones available? I regularly use my M95 helmet for all local autocross events.

All club events here in St. Louis accept motorcycle helmets as long as they are rated Snell 2000 or newer (I think they're going to Snell 2005 next year). Do they make SA rated helmets that aren't full face?
Happy Motoring!

I had the NSXCA loaner helmets for some of my autocrosses. They were open face and if I remember correctly, there were 6 helmets (2 small/2 med/2 lg).
They were mailed to LarryB and should be at Vegas.

the correct sizes are smelly....stinky....wreak....and putrid:tongue:

Just print this and stick it inside your helmet. End of problem!

Crap! Left mine at home...those things are expensive too. Any good stores in Vegas? I'm sure I'll need another one eventually anyway...

They are not easy to find in Vegas. I bought mine at The Spring Mountain Track a year or so ago. I recommend doing that also.
