hi do the axles ever need to be changed? im hearing a clicking some times coming from the rear when i back out. Yesterday i was going about 60 mph and i heard a kind of grinding or really fast rattling sound. I was thinking maybe bearings. Anyone have any experiences with this?

From my own personal experience, when i heard a clicking sound i didnt know what it was. After a week i noticed my shifter moved back and forth alot. and had some grinding noise, almost like the gears were not meshing. The symptoms i was experiencing was a snap ring failure. after getting it fixed i came to the conclusion that the ticking was the broken snap ring.

I dont know what year your NSX is but if its '91 or '92 and the ticking sound sounds like you got a rock stuck in between your tire tread, then it could very well be the snap ring.

Good luck.

have you serached to see if yours falls into the snap ring range? if not do a search and you will find the numbers pertaining to that. have you noticed any excessive play and movement of your shifter?

If your shifter moves back and forth (notably in 2nd) in concert with your throttle activity: snap ring. Stop driving car ASAP, your wallet is about to hurt badly ($4K); no need to make it any worse.

It could be a worn CV joint on the half-shaft axle, but it is very VERY rare if the boots have not been compromised. Darn things appear to be built to NASA specs!

It could also be a brake caliper/pad issue.

The CV joint and brakes can be checked by raising the car off and looking for loose stuff. Give the wheels and rotors some serious yanks and twists....and hope, you get lucky.

check your transmission number
if its between J4A4-1003542 through J4A4-1005978, then likely you have the snap ring issue.

Your VIN number has nothing to do with it.

Either way, let us know so that we can figure this out if it ever happens to us.

Check your brake pads

It could be your axle nut. The s2000's actually have a TSB for that exact issue. I know someone on the forum had the same issue and he re-torqued his axle nut and it solved his problem. Ill try to find the thread.

I have this exact noise..........my mechanic said it is the left rear axle inner joint. I haven't fix it yet.

It is very noticeable if you move from a stop, may be you can try it in some underground park or having someone hear it from outside your car.

I had the same problem. I pumped the joint full of grease. Its been great now for well over 3 years or about..... 10,000 miles or more.
