In the process of lightening the USCC NSX, I decided to make my own headlights. I could have done the 02 conversion, but I wanted to keep the 91 fascia for its larger venting up front. Removed motor and stock light units and fabricated brackets to hold PIAA lights. Total weight savings 18 pounds (total weight of both headlight/motor assemblies with covers was 34 pounds). More importantly, I've freed up space below to run 2.5 inch brake ducts (even when the lights are down) from what used to be the turn signal light (I used the old AC condensor area for oil coolers already). The new turn signal now occupies the old parking light (change to amber lights and switch wiring). The PIAA comes with parking lights, and everything is covered with a 1/8" lexan shield.

Regards,

Danny

Nice job Danny! So the lights are fixed upright all the time?

Do you know how much your car weighs? The last time I saw it you still had most of the interior in it. Time to pull out the carpets and door panels and save another 50+ lb's  Or if you still want your full interior you can take out the sound deadning behind the firewall panels and chip off the tar from your floorpan. That should be good for another 10-15lb's without going overboard.

They go down manually..I had them in the down position at PAG. Popped them up tonight because my daughter is out at the strip with the car tonight:eek: I just put in the Movit carpets and my wife likes them, so they are staying. I should have chipped the tar when I had the floorboard all exposed:mad:

Danny

ps, GET Jason to come on May 5th!

With the power you have you don't need any weight savings Danny. If anything you need some weight to keep the car on the ground.

Your not afraid of her tapping into all 1000hp?

She's trustworthy. Besides, she gets to inherit the car.

Shit, no a/c?

Come on Armando,

We all know Vegas is just dry heat:wink: Now Florida is a different matter all together!

the headlights are awesome looking... is the headlights (when up) at a full open position,or a custom lower opening?

Glad you like them. They are much lower than the stock opening because the lights are less than half the height of the stock units (about 2.5" with brackets). Stealth or sleepy, take your pick. The bulbs are the PIAA H3 4000K.

Bro, your a doctor and I see the rides in your sig. line...I think its time for that 02+ conversion:biggrin: Lights still look good but nothing beats that clean, OEM ferrari style look:wink:

Kid,

In all my modifications, I always aim to achieve more than one objective. In this case, weight loss is the superficial goal. If this was the only reason, I definitely would have done the '02 conversion before anyone else as I agree with the clean look that you mentioned along with the weight savings. However, the 02 fascia has fewer frontal openings (3 vs. 5) and less overall surface area of the openings than the 91 style. In this particular case, the old signal/parking light offered an opportunity to create brake scoops for me to run 2.5" ducts under the lights (even in the closed position) and to the front brakes. I don't think anyone has done this before. Any frontal area is PRIME REAL ESTATE when it comes to cooling and the '91 fascia just has more of it.

Danny

Armando,

The AC came out in 1997 when I was still NA and went overboard on weight savings. Not as intense as Simo (Diablo 360) is now, but crazy enough to do it to a Vegas car. How's your white lightning coming along?

I thought it might have been a ploy to keep the wife out of the car. :) My car is still running strong, on my way to my new best friends plce today(tire dealer) for a new set of rears. :)

My wife scares really easily so she stopped riding in the NSX in 1996. I can't even drive her bloated S-500 without her freaking out:biggrin: I need new shoes too. Gosh, what a terrible situation we are in:wink:

Hi Danny,

Your headlight project looks really good. I wish I could have seen it when we hooked up for dinner on April 6th. If you can, I would like to see some pics from the drivers seat to see how well your headlight project lights up the road.

When do you plan on going back to Southern California? I might be back next week the 26th.

Mike

Danny,
Do your brakes really get that hot that you need 2.5" ducts to cool them? I saw your car at autowave about a month ago and WOW! that is one hell of a set up! I love your brake setup.....I was waiting for Shane to turn his back long enough for me to swap them onto my car!!

Yes! Alot has to do with not having the correct pads anymore. The MMC rotors require a special pad which is no longer available. If the ducts don't help, I will be switching back to brembo rotors.:frown:
