headers

I'm looking into sourcing headers and was wondering if anybody knows of any dyno tests that may have been done from what is out there. Dc sports claims 18-20 hp just with headers (not sure if that's to the wheel or fly wheel hp), Rm claims 18.8 hp to the wheels coupled with their muffler, comptech doesn't mention anything at all. I guess overall peak hp is important but I'd like to see the entire picture with hp gains throughout. Does anybody have any good info or advise on these different headers or any other headers available?

Most of the well made headers are going to give you about the same improvement in hp at the wheels. I have the Comptech ones and they are beautiful pieces and really well made. Comptech also machines the flanges on the DC headers.

I do not know for sure, but I would guess that if you get the CT, RM or Dali headers you will see gains close enough that a dyno run would not show any real difference. Do not forget to consider materials when you chose your headers. SS vs ceramic coated, etc. Decide which properties are most important to you and pick the material that delivers that aspect best.

Anyone have any dyno results of stock 97+ header vs. aftermarket (same car, before and after)? The FAQ suggests getting an aftermarket header is still a win, but presents no empirical evidence. Inquiring minds want to know...

I really hope someone answers that last post. I have a muffler kit on my car(however I doubt it is a performance upgrade) I wanted to get an intake installed and even considered headers. But, once I saw the price for headers I decided it wasnt really worth it in terms of HP gains. I would rather use that money for other things. Maybe a brake upgrade. But just what difference in performance would there be for those with stock headers. Didn't Honda change the headers in '97???

Hopefully this works. Pulled this off the comptech page. Shows results with engine mods up to SC.

I agree with David that most well made headers, RM, CT, DC sport, and most Japanese ones gives the same amount of HP increase. Just pick the one that you have the most confidence in. I picked the Fujitsubo one for it's extra features and over the top quality.

I know it is an eyechart, but I posted it the only way I know how. I suggest checking the Comptech page if you cant read it.

I had a dyno on my Candy Cane car done with the OEM 1998 headers (before) and new set of CT headers (after) and with a stock exhaust and no cats the difference was +2-3HP. Clearly not worth the $ unless you are looking for every last HP. (we were) I'm sure they would have helped a little more if they had a decent exhaust to blow into. I'm also very sure that they would have produced a 10-12HP gain on a 3.0L that ships with the crap OEM cast iron slug.

The headers seem to add horsepower and sound, but what a pain to install! I like the aftermarket parts I can handle myself.

Oh yeah, Mark just sold me some Eibach's so I guess I'll learn how to install springs!

Here is a comparison at the track. In October of 1999 I ran completely stock including Yoko A022’s. The following October I ran with CT Intake, Headers, Exhaust, and no cats (stock tires). The weather on both days was comparable. Through the 1/8th mile there was virtually no difference. By the ¼ mile, the modifications began to take affect, albeit only slightly. By the end of the ¼ mile I had picked up .1 seconds and 4 mph. This tells me that I traded low end torque for high end horsepower. This may indicate that 4.55 gears will have a significant affect. However, what I don’t know is what each modification individually contributed or took away. My gut feel is that the intake provided a ram air affect at sppeds above 85 mph and may have, by itself, provided the better top end performance. Keep in mind that static dyno tests do not show this ram air affect. Also, I wonder if the Intake alone would have provided greater performance all around (i.e. retain low end torque and increase high end power).

I think Mark is on target here.

1) The headers really don't reach full potential unless you free up the entire exhaust.

2) I think I got about 15-18hp on my 3.0L with my header and exhaust combo, but it was years ago and I don't have the dyno data any more.

Dswartz,
What tires were you running? Those are some killer 60ft times. Thanks.
