My local Acura mechanic is selling the headers and muffler off a 2002 NSX.
Mine is a stock 1992.

I'd like to use his header for more power. I'd like to use his muffler for the looks.

I've read many posts on fitting the different exahust pieces together, and even read some vendor's pages. But, I'm still not clear on what the best couse of action is or exactly what is necessary to make this work.

Can a late-model muffler even mate up to an old cat?

What would you recommend?
Thanks in advance.

Just buy the headers. The cats won't help you and they have extra O2 sensor in them that you won't need or can use. I don't believe the newer mufflers are any better than the 92 you have.

Get the adaptor pipes to match the newer style headers to mate to your exisiting cats. The flanges will require some mods to work with the adaptors I believe. SOmeone has a thread on doing this here.

Ask him if you can get the newer style exhaust tips off of him to replace yours for the same look.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong on the fitment.

Depends on the cost of the OEM headers. The adaptor from SOS alone is $250. It may be better to go with a real headers since the installation cost is the same and I m sure they will outperform the OEM.

I agree. You're better off getting aftermarket headers. They will most likely outperform OEM headers, and they are lighter and look nicer too.

Thanks for the advice.

The headers and muffler would cost me $400. That plus the $250
for connectors is $650. I see headers for sale on NSX Prime for $650 and
up (way up). I guess I could just buy aftermarket headers.

I am planning on doing the install myself. I guess I like pain.

Are the tips just welded on? So, I'd need a shop to unweld what I have and then weld on the newer style tips?

Thanks a bunch.

My setup did not require anything extra. I have 02+ headers, with oem 93 cats and 93 exhaust style. All that was done to make mine work was modding the cats. Have a flange cut off then having a section of new length of pipe wielded to the old flange on each cat.

This was already fabbed up this way when I purchased it used. but looking from under my car, that's all the was done.

I say use the headers, mod the cats to fit, and put on new exhaust tips.

Your tips just screw on...and I'm pretty sure the +02 ones do as well. I'm not sure of the diameter difference of the pipes they screw onto though so measure it.. Be sure to coat the hold on bolts with some rust breaker/liquid wrench so they don't shear off.

Offer him $250 for the headers and the exhaust tips. You can always get some aftermarket tips for the same look if he wont' separate them. MUch more than that you're better of spending the xtra $$ and getting aftermarket headers.

Yep, LOTS more money if you go the aftermarket route. Because if you get aftermarket headers ($1000+), you're gonna want to go aftermarket exhaust too ($1000+). And that's just a nice rounded number, lol. I've seen headers and exhaust system as cheap as $1500 all the way to...... $6000+
