I am looking for a hand-held computer. I don't know anything about it. All I know is that there are two types of operating systems: Palm and Miscrosoft Pocket PC?

I think that I need palm based OS for the specific application that I need. I don't need any fancy functions. I do not care too much about B&W or Color. I just need lots of memories.

Could you recommend me one?

Tiger, I'm not sure what specific application you need, but I've been pretty happy with my old 3Com Palm III so far. It was a hand-me-down from my brother, and one of the earlier models (so memory is limited to 2M), but meets all my needs. I use the PDA primarily for the calendar function, phone book, and a nifty free program called HandyShopper that lets me create all kinds of databases (shopping lists/price books, checklists, bookmarks, etc.). It's older, so the B&W screen and slower processor really help conserve the two AAA batteries (I get over a month with typical usage). It's happily replaced my paper organizer, and I'll never look back.

One recommendation for buying a PDA: don't scrimp on the screen size. Your eyes will experience strain looking at those tiny screens on the cheaper models (Palm M100, Zire). For the same amount of money as those new, you can find a larger screen used model on eBay.

Good luck!

i'd recommend the Sony Clie (weird spelling) ... it uses Palm OS, has a memory stick slot (so no storage problems here!!!). Of course, Sony is always more expensive but it's a good quality build. You can check out <A HREF="http://www.sonystyle.com/">more info here</A>.

if the specific application u need to run happens to be ChickMagnet Pro v2.1, that comes built into all Sony PDA's.

i echo Phoe<FONT COLOR=red>N$X</FONT>'s comments on screen size; Size matters.

I bought the newest Sony Clie, very ncie unit. Great in everyway except that the software support seems to be not as good as pocket PC based PDAs. I kinda regret it slightly, but it's s stylish, functional, and easy to use unit.

I agree with maomaonsx, the Palm OS is slowly becoming outdated and obsolete as Microsoft's PocketPC platform gains popularity in the portable computing market. There are a few Linux based handhelds, but I don't know much about them.

The Sony Clie's are nice, but way too expensive for my taste. The same can be said of the high-end Palm models (i.e., Tungsten). For the same price you can get a low end desktop PC, and that's a lot to pay for portability.

That said, my next PDA will probably be a PocketPC based device.

...but you can't use a Desktop PC as a TV remote control!

yes, that is a downside to sony's clie... i'd prefer PocketPC (and its mini BSOD) myself also.

...although Tiger740 said he thought he needed PalmOS.

I'd go with the new Hp Ipaq 5455. Its in the $600-$700 price range but operates on pocket pc, comes with built in 802.11b wireless capabilities and bluetooth technology. Voice recorder, and media player, not to mention secure digital expansion slot. I have long thought secure digital would be the card that prevails from all other media cards. Its the smallest and doesn't rely on Sony's patented memory stick.

I think you can download the nevo software onto other pocket pc units, but it comes loaded on this one. The nevo software allows you to operate virtually any remote control equipment (tv's, sound systems, vcr, dvd player, remote fans, etc...) Similar devices sell in the hi-fi stores in the $100's of dollars for those fancy remotes. Pretty wild unit. It even has the fingerprint password protection. Nice looking screen too.
