I just finished installing the Hanabi HID 6k kit. the cars looks fabulous and it's very bright just as much as my other cars with 6k Hella (96 Maxima and 2000 Pathfinder). I am very happy with the set up. Installation time was about 2hrs. I'll try to post some pics of the lites.

What did you do to adjust the length of the bulb to make sure that it's positioned properly for the NSX projector lens?

mynsx,
$350

nsxtasy,
nothing. the hid bulbs are for 9006 and they made sure that it would be the same focal point as a stock 9006 bulb. i.e. no adjustments necessary to the bulb just put the retainer back in. Make a hole on the cap so wires go through to the ballast. I secured everything w/ cable ties and that's it. Installation was very clean hehehe

Dave

So you didnt have to cut wires and stuff? I thought that was a big selling point for the SOS kit.

Chris just incorporated it into his kit.

I am confused. What is the difference between this kit and the SOS kit, besides being $300 less.

I have no interest in SoS but recently had to make the same decision.

Without seeing the actual components you have I can tell you the minimum differences are:

- Technical knowledge and installation manual
- Chris includes Acura Caps that have holes cut out and come with gaskets to keep the water out
- SoS stands behind kit
- Kit includes all the misc hardware you need for the installation (bolts, wire ties, industrial velcro, etc.)

I shop a lot on Ebay and have purchased things that were not that much cheaper then retail. These things inevitably go bad, need a lot more work, and have nobody standing behind them.

If you want to figure this out on your own, risk water getting in the housings, have nobody to call if there is a problem, and make 3 trips to the hardware store to save $150 bucks - then step right up - your DIY HID kit is waiting...

Some clarification...

The base McCulloch kit is $549.00 (http://www.mccullochhid.com/index2.htm). We take the base kit and customize it for the NSX. Our price is $580.00 which covers parts and the labor to customize the kit. Our kit features modified end caps (over $30.00 alone from your dealer), modified wiring, and modified seals that allow the kit to be installed into the NSX with out any cutting of wires (eg. Autolamps) or modifying of your stock parts. We also provide our experience which manifests as a full instruction manual with pictures exclusive for the NSX. We also stand behind the kit with toll-free telephone and e-mail support. The kit also includes a year warranty.

Before the latest generation of HID technology using D2S factory replacement components was introduced, kits were even more expensive and complex to install. I believe RM used to offer their kits for $1100. Many lower quality kits are now available due to advances in HID technology making the kits less expensive to manufacture, and they most certainly can be used. However, our product was designed to be an exclusive retrofit kit for the NSX that addresses the unique requirements of the NSX for installation.

Cheers,
-- Chris

My friend has two sets of hanabi hid's on one of his cars ....they have been installed for over a year without any problems.Yes there are some cheaper hid kits out on the market made with lower grade componets but i dont belive this is one of them. I connected my kit with a custom set of jumpers i made and did not have to cut any wires and since the lamps came with a gasket i did not use the cover. mine have been fine and ive had them for the last two years.

the kits just plugs in. no cutting or splicing wires at all!!! Just use a drill and me a 1inch diameter hole in the bulb cap and make all wires go through. Plug all connectors to the ballast and igniter. Secure everything with cable ties. test the lite and if it lites up just put back the cover. Wella! now you have HIDS! let me know if you guys have more questions.

Don't you lose the water-tight seal of the end cap that way? So that you risk condensation inside the headlight unit?

the Hanabi kit comes with a groomet that fits right on that 1inch hole...exactly. so no you won't have nothing fogging up. My previous car also had custom HIDS from a X5 that I had to custom make the 9006 arms for those bulb. that car never had any forgging on the headlight even without a cap. It didn't have a cap from factory. so no problems there. If you are a wary person, buy the sos kit.

This is what stood out to me when reading the above link:

Note: This conversion kit is not DOT approved. It is sold for show car or off-road use only. Check local laws before using.

I don't know about you but this has a fix-it-ticket written all over it. And you know if cops pull you over for that, they will certainly look for other things to add to his list. No thanks.

That same note is on the McCulloch website. Since SoS uses the basic components for this kit, I assume that none of the kits mentioned in this thread are DOT approved.

AFAIK, no aftermarket HID retrofit "headlamp" kit is DOT approved. The reason being that halogen housings are not optically set-up for HIDs.

Decosse,
I got it from this guy in NYC who gets in from a shop. email me and I'll give u his cell #. cool?

For the ppl following this thread...this kit is not DOT approved. None of them are! But if the cop says something about my headlites I would tell him that it's made by Sylvania....it's the new Sylverstar bulbs! hehehehe

Fog lights and driving lights do not have the same beam pattern as headlights and are not a substitute for headlights.

You are not likely to get a fix-it ticket for a high-quality HID system with a sharply defined beam cutoff.

yep, what Ken and madfast said...again, I was referring to headlight retrofits. BTW, sending this back to the top. I'm eagerly awaiting Chris's (or any SOS HID owner's) reply to the tinted bulb question...TIA
