So I am looking to buy another NSX. I came across one that I am really interested in, but the owner says that every once in a while, the car will make a loud grinding noise at start up. I suppose 1/15 starts this will happen.
Anyway, my question is if this is a common problem as I have never experienced it with my previous NSX. And if so, is it a cheap fix (ie $300 starter?)?? If this grinding happened to damage the flywheel, what would be symptons of missing teeth?

Any info would be helpful. Thanx in advance!

The odds are clearly against the flywheel. It has something like twenty times the number of teeth and they are made of a softer steel than the starter drive gear. You can remove the starter and inspect the flywheel thru the opening, with a mirror and see the tips of the damaged teeth.
And there is no 300. starter for an NSX, but I believe there is a 650. starter for an NSX.

If there are a few chipped teeth on the flywheel: won't the starter grind away at the flywheel as it engages time to time?

It is surprising to me that the NSX doesn't have a starter cut when the engine is running...
