Gps Navi

Hi

I think Gheba's solution is better if you want to move between cars with you GPS.

My solution was cheaper and I did not mind what PPC unit I got since I use the best palmtop ever invented for everything in my life.

The PPC is for "fun" and the GPS.

I highly recommend TomTomNavigator. It was sooo nice when I went over 7000km in my NSX

Regards

Any suggestions on a portable GPS navigation unit to switch between several cars?
Assuming you're willing to invest in a dedicated GPS device, I've had very positive experience recently with the Magellan RoadMate 700 product (see http://www.magellangps.com/en/products/roadmate.asp ).

Its been rated best-in-class in several reviews, including a recent R&T issue, superior in most respects to offerings from Garmin and others.

Do a search on "Magellan RoadMate" -- a Forum Member Andy Buzz offers great deals on these.

Hi

Does the Magellan have anything like the Checkpoint program?

It was great. It warned me for every speedcam on my way.

Regards

I've tried several including the navi built into my 01 CL. IMO the Garmin StreetPilot is the best of the bunch. I have the StreetPilot III and its awsome, but does not hold much detailed map storage. (128MB maximum). The new Garmin StreetPilot 2620 is an even better device with an internal hard drive that holds detailed map info of the whole United States (48 states), and major Canadian cities. It also has a cool touch screen and a remote.

The Garmin iQue 3600 looks pretty good to me.

RoadMate 700

This sounds like a GREAT feature; the Magellan RoadMate does NOT have it, unfortunately.

The RoadMate incorporates the features and UI of the (popular) NeverLost GPS that is available in Hertz rental cars. I've used these a lot before, hence my familiarity and preference for their products.

The RoadMate 700 is comparable to the Garmin 2620 (HDD holding all of US/Canada, touchscreen, etc). The lower-model (RM 500) uses removable media to store subsets of the map in lieu of the HDD (comparable to Garmin's 2610). Here's a review from PC Magazine, and one from publisher ZD Net.

Andy Buzz (dealer guy, on these forums, and owns an NSX) might be able to comment further on the various models.

Thanks for all the replies. I sent the link to this thread to Renee to research. The unit will be for her to use between our vehicles. She racks up 1000 miles a week and we need to spread it out over all the vehicles rather than clocking it on just one.

Be sure to post back with the results of her research! I was all set to order an Ique 3600 then someone suggested the Tungsten T3 so I was all hot to trot on that now I'm confused and not sure what I'm going to do...

Ok I have been doing some research and have a few questions.
Which portable unit will work as good as a DVD based permanently installed unit like the one found in a Lexus or Nissan (touch screen, voice active). I just bought a 04 Murano and I loved the DVD based navigation but the rest of the vehicle was junk IMO. I traded the Murano for a Touareg after 9900 mile because of the lack of quality feel in the Murano. I also bought an A-6 4.2 at the same time. Both of these do not have navigation and I would like to get a portable unit to switch between the two vehicles. I would like to get one which will be good for the next few years technology wise. I want to learn how to use the unit and then not have to take the time to figure out another unit for a while to come.

Does anyone here on Prime have or know of a reliable source to purchase a unit at a good price?

thanks in advance
Steveny

Edit: I am really liking the NAVMAN PiN. I am a little confused as I have seen units advertised as having the 48 states preprogrammed and others advertised as coming with cd's. Any input is appreciated.

You might want to check out the Tomtom "Go" Navigator. Looks pretty good. Also see the thread currently running in the stereo and electronics section.

Contact Prime User "Andy Buzz" out of Tampa FL -- he is a dealer for most popular NAV/GPS systems, both portable and permanently-mounted.

He gives good pricing and is pretty knowledgeable about available units. Several Prime members have purchased units from him, including myself.

The NAVMAN PiN product line is an interesting alternative too. Some of their units seem to be dedicated portable units (ala Magellan / Garmin); others are GPS/NAV enabling add-ons to the I-Paq, Palm or notebook PCs.

This appears to be the Mitac Mio 168, also sold in some countries as the Yakumo 300 and the Space Machine SkyWalker GPS-500.

Well she bought the Garmin IQ3600. During the research part I came up with another question.
Is there a all in one unit which would be a cell phone, pda, and a gps navi unit? I found one which is the ipaq H6315, but it only works with t-mobile which is not available out here in the sticks. Does anyone know of a unit that would work with Cingular wireless or Verizon, maybe even at&t?

Good luck with the new iQue. Free up some hard drive space on your home PC because it uses up quite a bit for the initial map installation. Also if you haven't purchased an SD memory card for it yet swing out to ecost.com and check the Bargains section for some good deals. Get at least 256 mb or higher.

Let me know if you have any problems setting it up. I've had mine for over 1 year now and have been very happy.

Here's a link to my installation in the NSX (just as easily done in any other car):

She returned the IQ3600 because she did not like the way it operated. She purchase the Garmin StreetPilot 2620 to replace the returned unit. I have to say I too like the StreetPilot much better myself. The only complaint thus far is the size of the screen is a little small for my aging eyes to see from a distance.

I recently bought the Navman iCN 510. Only thing I don't like about it is it doesn't always give the most direct route to places. When it does this, I have to put avoid areas into it in order for it to point out the most direct route. On a positive note, I like the option of it being able to find the nearest POI along the route i.e., fast food, gas or hotel. It is real easy to switch it from car to car. It mounts on the window via a suction cup. Definitely a good bargain for its price. Oh, forgot to mention if you are getting something like this, make sure you get enough memory to hold the maps. I bought a 512mb card. This is able to hold most of the states from NY to FL. I think each state is roughly about 20-50mb.

I forgot about this post. Here is an update. Renee's parents drove to California for the winter. While on the way out and in California as well they have gotten lost driving. So Renee shipped them the 2620 to use for the winter while they are out their. In shipping the unit was completely pierced by the postal service. Good thing she insured it. I am not sure what she is going to do about replacing it.

Hello - Ive got a StreetpilotIII and I am wondering how you guys have mounted your 2620/2610s.

I have the RAM mounts that worked wonderfully for my S2000 (which I mounted via the screw for the footwell netting). I cant find a good location to screw the ram mount into in my new 02 NSX.

Any help would be appreciated!
