Got small crack in coolant tank. Car overheated with hissing. Taped up..need new?

Hi guys.

I got a small crack in the coolant tank which caused a hissing this morning when I was warming up the engine. I filled up the car with new coolant and taped up the crack.

I will probably need a new tank, but noticed people got some aluminum or stainless steel ones. Anyone know where to purchase them?

Am I fine driving for a while like this? I got an extra bottle of coolant in the truck if the coolant starts to go down again.

Boy it was a shocker to see the engine temperature rise all the way to the top. A first time for me.

IMO it is not OK to drive like that. The cooling system relies on pressure to maintain the boiling point and maximize heat transfer to the fluid. You're at much higher risk of boiling, which even further reduces cooling capacity of the system...snowball effect toward an overheat.

SOS has metal tanks. The newer ones are made with a sight glass to make it easier to keep an eye on the coolant level. Some early units leaked, but I haven't heard anything bad since. I'll probably get one eventually.

I know from experience it will make a small problem like a crack HUGE, been there done that...yes, took the heads off....
.
Tape is NOT gonna hold any liquid in.

i got the SOS tank but mine is the older one without the glass. I have no issues with it and it adds a nice bling factor to the engine bay.

Tape certainly won't hold the liquid. I wonder if that watercraft epoxy (it looks like clay and can be found at Wal-mart and auto part stores) will hold it as a "temporary" solution. I was tempted to try it out when my coolant had a crack, but was fortunate to find someone local selling a extra coolant that same day.

Stick-e-rice, I have an extra coolant bottle here for free (small crack on seam) if you want to try it out or you can try it on your own bottle. Since it is a pressurized system, i'm not sure if it will hold and how long. But it sure is better than tape.

Try not to drive it, but if you do, keep a liter of extra coolant in your trunk. Watch that needle carefully.

Dali has some cylindrical metal ones and SOS has some with sight glass.

As others have stated, you don't want to maintain that driving condition. SoS makes a great one. And I don't mind saying you can always check the NSX Parts for Sale Forum for one like this.

my tape seems to be ok with the temporary fix. The leak is very small and the coolant was probably leaking for a while.

I will get a new tank, although I must admit that I am cheap.:tongue:

The tape seems to be working fine though.:biggrin:

You can always get an OEM tank. They're pretty cheap. I'd replace the one you have most definitely. I had a leak and boy did it make a mess. Green goo everywhere when it evaporated.

SOS's is $279.

Even if you look at the Price of OEM, the $158 DR is cheap. It took me literally 15 minutes to install it. I then got the car over to Acura, and had them Bleed and reinstall fluid.

Couldn't be easier.

Sorry to be a lil bit direct but IMO it's astonishing how people neglect their car and endanger a BIG-$ part because of a $100 part.

I bought Ponyboy's dali tank, which is on the way. I taped it up for just the meantime.

I appreciate the offer on the free tank Bodhi. But I would owe you and would prefer to buy it cheap.:biggrin:
