Don’t worry, wasn’t a DUI for me :). This is my third “arrest” for a drunk driver that I called in on. I won’t go into the other stories, which were a little more action packed than this most recent one (thankfully).

So anyways, I am on a trip from Los Angeles to Seattle, WA. One of my stops was in Portland, OR for my uncle’s retirement party (30yrs as a police officer). So I am cruising along after 12hrs of driving and see a GMC Yukon enter into the lane to his left and then back, then to the right lane, then back, and continuing this numerous times. I pulled alongside him to check to see if he had kids or any other passengers. Then I pulled in behind him with my hazards on and dialed 911. Got dispatch and continued to follow the gentlemen and give our location. Then we exited off the freeway and proceeded to go 30 in a 45 zone with numerous occasions of almost running into the curb.

I continued to list direction and cross streets coming up as I could hear the dispatcher furiously typing in the background. Then I see two officers driving opposite direction (no lights or sirens) and I blow my horn at them to turn around. Because I had to slow to alert them the Yukon carried on through the light at the upcoming intersection and I got caught at the red. The officers pulled a U-turn after the median and came barreling my way (with lights this time). One cabbie that wasn’t paying attention came into the intersection right as the officers approached and the officer almost sideswiped me as he had to slam on his brakes and steer right. Luckily the cabbie also hit his brakes and the officers continued on. I was instructed to pull up behind the officers and hung up with dispatch. The officer came back to me and laughed when he realized I was from CA catching drunks in OR haha. Thanked me for the deed and let me know that he was undeniably drunk. Glad I was able to get him off the street before anything bad happened. Time from initiation of 911 call to intercept – 7min 42sec. Thought it was a good way to honor my uncle’s 30yr retirement party :)

Anyone else have a story to share? Would love to hear them!

I've tailed people for 15 minutes before while on the phone with dispatch and NADA, never. I've tried 5 or 6 times.

A friend of mine pulled someone out of a car and threatened to shoot them if they tried to leave. Waiting on cops and the guy got arrested (the drunk). Good times.

Called twice on this nearly getting wrecked by one of them, both were no-show on the five-0.

Called FedEx on a delivery driver that ran two people off the road, and when we ran up on him he was texting. 1 year later (three weeks ago) we got a death threat voice mail. Nice.

Had an officer walk around the corner of my garage while I was smoking a cigarette and drinking a beer, and he asked for a ride in the Lotus. He was in uniform. I obliged. Nice guy, but what the heck was he thinking?

My house has been broken into twice in the last 6 months and I still can't get anyone to call me back to follow up on the fingerprints they took.

Got a ticket in the Viper for 35 in a 30. After I had done the other local cop (mentioned above) a favor, I thought I would get some slack. Not so. He insisted I was making too much noise. Yes, it had a loud exhaust, but c'mon. It's the same crap that goes on with Harleys versus a loud car stereo. No one ever gets tickets for noise on a Harley. I'm out of the car stereo stage at my age, but the argument is still valid.

One of my best friends just became a deputy at 30 years old, and I'm proud of him for it. He left a job making more than twice as much money to do it. Said it's what he wants to do. He's happy, and he's a good guy. You're on here, so I'm generalizing when surmising that you are as well. Just wish there were more like the two of you.

I called 911 to report an irratic driver about six years ago. The person was driving 35mph on I-95 weaving across three lanes and almost going off the side into a ditch. They exited the highway across the grass of the off ramp and didn't stop for one red light. I was on the phone the entire time and took the cops 20 minutes to come meet me as the driver had pulled into a retirement home. It ends up the person was very old and shouldn't have been driving.

Even though we all know drunk drivers are bad, an eldery person can be just as dangerous to other people on the road. Exceptions are the NorCal group of course.

Ken, Hal and I thank you for the recognition and kind remarks.

Hoverounds rule!

I was driving home from the bars one night at 3am (completely sober) in the NSX. Four lane highway, completely empty and this guy choses to go around me on the right, on the shoulder. So then it's apparent he's wasted. Speeding up, slowing down, weaving. Now, not to throw stones as I've probably made my way home before when I shouldn't have (cruise control on & steer) but driving drunk AND aggressive driving is a bad combo. So I call 911 and follow the guy. He gets off the highway and gets back on going the other way. So I'm following him while talking to Dispatch. He realizes that he's being followed so he takes off.... so I'm telling dispatch that it's a Pontiac G6 and he's doing 90 mph and I'm following but keeping 100 yards back, just in case pieces of the POS start flying off. So I tell the Dispatch where we are currently at and he's now doing 110 mph. Dispatch asks me what kind of car I'm in. "Nice" he says, "guess he's not going to be out running you tonight". Tells me to keep in visual contact but don't get close. Two Sheriffs cars finally, after 10 minutes of pacing him at 100+, pull on the highway and box the guy in.

Definitely wasn't posting for thanks, but thank you. I have been on NUMEROUS DUI stops (with uncle) and have seen the aftermath of some we didn't make it to in time. I will ALWAYS, 100% of the time drop what I am doing and get a drunk off the road. Luckily I don't see them to often, but when I do, they are mine! I guess I have been really lucky with police response and each time it has taken less than 10min. Even when for one I was in an unfamiliar area and had to look hard for street signs. Unfortunately I think its safe to say this is not my last DUI arrest.

Jonas -- Was the death threat from the FedEx guy? Sounds like things are on a downswing for you, but no worries, they always swing back up. Positive thinking .

Nice job CL65, glad you stuck with that guy.

I will keep this in mind, SFDreamer. I don't know that I've ever really seen a DUI driver but I know they kill innocent people. What you did might have saved lives. You didn't post for thanks but you did get me thinking about it so I thank you for that, as well as for doing the right thing.

I called 911 on an obviously drunk woman about two weeks ago.

It was around midnight on the freeway....

The 911 operator asked me to hold and transferred me. Then another person got on the phone....transferred me again.

I held the line for about a minute. Someone else got on the phone...transferred me again to "sheriff's" office.

The phone rang about 20 times and I said screw it and hung up.

Go cops.

Yes it was from the FedEx guy, or so we think. He went into the whole FedEx driver thing and us calling. People like this are never the brightest around. He started off the voicemail with, "Hi, this is Brett". So, he could have made the name up. I mean, who the hell calls to leave a death threat voicemail and says their name at the beginning? The part that is almost as disturbing is how he managed to get our number. Did his manager give it to him after writing him up and say, "Here, you want to deal with this yourself?" It's beyond me.

never did anything like that myself, but I wanted to thank you anyway for the job well done.

and CL65 LOL that's an excellent way to drive 100 m/h legally, why didn't I think of that.

they must have connected you to the PD here. :)

I will say thank you...

cant say i ever called in a drunk while following them.... BUT my grand parents were killed by a drunk driver on christmas eve. (about 32 years ago) and i have no remorse for drunk driving

great stories guys.

I have one. was late one night and
pulled up behind a guy in a AstroVan
at a red light to make a left turn.
the light changed he didnt move,
I honked, nothing after the second red light
I pulled up next to him and looked in he was
sleeping with a can of beer on his dash.
I called the cops and I waited with my
hazards on till they got there. he would
not wake up they banged and banged on
the window so they broke the passengerside
window to gain entry. they then woke the guy up
and he was wasted.
the cops wrote down my name and that was it.

I've called the local police department (not 911) on slow-azz drivers doing 30 MPH in a 45 mph zone at 5:00 PM with 20 cars backed up. <SHRUGS> COPS NEVER SHOWED UP!

I've called 911 on semi-trucks merging in and almost taking out 10 cars at once, including an NSX! I called 911 on a truck that had it's rear wheel whobbling violently   as if the lug nuts were not tightened properly and/or tire blew out on the freway. It was freaky as hell. It felt like a premonition out of Final Destination.

Followed the guy for about 10 minutes, didn't see a cop show up, took the next exit too dangerous! I didnt' hear of 20 car pile up accident so assume he got pulled over eventually or he figured it out. I kept honking at the guy and trying to get him to see, but he thought I was being a smart ass in a pimped out yellow Honda Civic

Definitely sounds like a scary situation.

I am really surprised as to why I have received quick attention and action on all three of my attempts so far. I can only imagine how many bad situations have resulted in departments not taking calls seriously sometimes :frown:
