Hello,

Just wanted to get everyone's opinion on this....

I have a chance of getting a 91 NSX black/black. 5 spd. 117K miles. for $21,500. The car is from the second owner.

Recent work...Valve adjustment, new clutch, new rear seals, new tires.
 
I think that's a hell of a deal, assuming that the body and engine is in good condition. If I have the money, I'll buy it as my second NSX.
 
Look into it some more. That's far too cheap for a car in good conidition with a clean title. Good condition cars of that year with 117K go for high 20s, maybe mid 20s. 21K is a steal. Just make sure it's clean first. Is it an auto?
 
I too agree that this is a steal. Now the question is who is stealing from who. Check it out some more. The price seems too low, find out why it is so cheap.
 
I to looked into the vehicle and my only concern was that the car did fall into the Snap Ring failure range and he did say that it was taken care of, but it sounded like they just put a new snap ring and according to Mark Basch this is not the way to repair it. it needs a new case. What do you all think about that? if it hasn't failed yet what are the chances that it will in the future? Khuezee did you see picts of the car?
 
At that price, even if the snap ring was not fixed, it would still be a steal at 21K plus the cost of snap repairs.
I recently saw an auto with 180K go for more than that. Check for 90K service and timing belt/water pump. That will add another $1500-2K to your bill.

If the trans has not failed in 117K miles the case is most likely OK. Besides, at that price, fixing the trans is a minor repair $$ wise.

If the car is solid, I wouldn't do the repair until it needed a clutch, or it actually failed. This is the direct advise from Mark.

The cost of the case is $700 retail and we all can do better then that if we try a little bit (like call Eric at Neillo). I would not even focus on this issue at all, what's up with the rest of the car, that's where I would be focused.

What is the price to repair the snap ring as opposed to replacing the case. I am assuming the "case" as in the actual transmission???

In addition, if it is 117K miles and the owner has had it for 5 years, should I be worried?

Don't want to sound ignorant or nothing..but who is Mark Basch? Is he famous NSX mechanic? Located where? And is he the person who I would contact to locate a "case"??

Mark is the owner of Basch Acura, an independent Acura shop located in Phoenix, AZ. He is a factory trained NSX mechanic, and he contributes to the NSX community on a regular basis.

He has been a big help to many of us, over the years, and knows his stuff.

As far as the case goes, do you wish to purchase the part, or have the repair done? I know Mark has an exchange program if that interests you.

If you want to buy the part call Eric Milam at Niello Acura in CA. Check in the FAQ here and read the TSB for the trans to see exactly what you need for this repair. It does require a few more parts, not big ticket items, but to be complete check this out.

Again, this is a small detail at this point, don't get hung up on the snap ring.

Check out things like the A/C and climate control, which could cost you the price of three snap ring repairs if faulty.

Check for bad body work, major frame damage etc. When it comes to $$$ for repairs, these are the things that really add up.

Regarding the snap ring...

There is no fix that doesn't involve the replacment of the case.

As I understand it the tranny case was machined incorrectly. A small chamfer on the snap ring groove was out of spec.

Of course, it may fail or not. But the only real fix is to replace the case.

Typically, this is accomplished by simply swapping the transmission and having the suspect trans rebuilt.

In fact, there's apparently not even a way to visually inspect and measure the groove to determine if the groove is out of spec or not. Suspect cases are simply replaced.

Is there anyone out there that would hesitate to put in a SC or Turbo in a nsx that has 117K on it? I know that there was thread on nsx that had >100K and these are Honda engines and they do last but would the engine hold up to a SC that has been fatigued for 117K miles?
 
I'm having the S/C installed with 102k.

I've had the oil analyized since I got the car and all the numbers indicate a perfeclty-operating engine. If the tests show wear I will remove the S/C that moment.
