I started swinging the sticks again and want to get a new driver. I currently play with Tommy Armour 855i's with S300 stiff shafts. I'm hitting my drives 265yds on the fly, but i want another 10-25yds. I haven't bought new clubs in about eight years and I know the technology has changed a lot. What do some of you guys recommend. Calloway, Nike, Taylor, Cobra?? I'd like to spend under $450 if possible.

-TIA

There is no one best driver out there. Most of it comes down to the individual regarding what look and sound they like best. I'd definitely recommend to stay with the major manufacturers: Titleist, TaylorMade, Cobra, Ping, Callaway, etc.

My personal preference is for Titleist, but regardless of what head you decide on be sure if possible to get fit by a local PGA Professional. It is the combiniation of the head selected when paired with the appropriate shaft (length, type - including weight & torque, flex) and ball which will yield the greatest dividends. In an ideal situation it is best to be fit by a PGA Professional utilizing a launch monitor (allowing the Professional to monitor exact launch angle, ball speed and spin rate with different combinations of clubs) on an outdoor practice facility, however that can be tough to come by.

Enjoy the search!

i would suggest the following.

callaway 454 HT titanium driver with regular graphite shaft. ( or stiffer graphite than regular).
buy it at callaway pre-owned site. should run about 150 dollars.
this one club completely changed my game. also my Dad's.

I'm currently playing the Ping G2. . . so far I'd say this is one of the easiest and forgiving drivers I ever had. The 460cc club head really helps with the mis-hits.

I was playing the Titleist 975 series before my Ping and I admit they were very nice drivers, but the playability is tough. Don't know about the new Tileist drivers, but the older ones are definitely for the lower handicappers.

In the end though, like the previous post, it all comes down to preference and skill level.

If anyone needs discounts on golf clubs, I may be able to help.

I can get 40% discounts on a major golf manufacturer's retail price.

However, the caveat to this assistance is that you must know exactly what you want, and pre-pay for the club(s).

If you want to run a pre-paid service, you got yourself some competition...

Sorry, couldn't resist.

On-topic- Everyone has different needs when it comes to the big-dawg. The best driver I ever hit was on old Wilson Pro-Staff 1 Wood

It was so old it was actually wood. I was getting great acurate distance out of it until I knocked the face off it one night at the driving range. My game has never recovered.

Like you, I have been using Tommy Armour clubs for a long time. I still use the 845 irons but updated my driver with 845 Ti Persimmon 300cc one. I bought it online for $80 and I love how it drives. Much easier to hit than my old 855 driver which broke. Anyway, you might want to try out the Persimmon 400cc if you want bigger head. It's a lot cheaper than high end Nike/Carraway etc.

Great replies guys; thanks. I found my grandfathers old wooden clubs, I'm going try them this weekend.

Pre-Paid is the best!! :D

I've been wacking with Big Bertha Ti for 7 yrs:biggrin:

I use a Taylormade 580 XD for the past couple years. I like it better than the newer technology R7 or R5 in the lineup. I average around 280 yrd drives and the club has made all the difference in the world. And its reallly cheap now. Costco had them and Ebay should have them for pretty cheap too now. Good luck with your golf game hope I was able to help.

And I will only help people who I know or have been long time NSX Prime members.

How long a member? Is this a complete set or can the be split? I need a new putter and rescue wedge.

Tried to send you a PM, but your inbox is full. Please PM me.

It can be whatever you want. So yes, just a putter and rescue wedge.

I can only do this a limited number of times (read few), so that's why I'm only doing this for long time NSX Prime members or people I know. I guess you qualify. ;)

I like the Nike driver...but I also have the Callaway ERC-II driver....both seems to work good for me...
