Great pix! Did the Ferarri have problems?

It was awesome for the 6 or 7 laps during it's first and only run but unfortunately came in, was on a lift for at least 2 hours, and then was packed up and trucked off. They seemed to be working on the rear suspension of the car but didn't hear what (if anything) was wrong or why they were leaving.

Pretty safe to assume that something was in fact wrong since the day had just started but maybe someone else who spoke to the gentleman could chime in.

An amazing car that you could probably hear for 100 miles!

I have yet to hear a CS in person, but in every video they sound LOUD and AWESOME!

Not surprised it broke though. :)

I was sad it broke and ran since I wanted to take more video chasing it down in my 91 NSX since he passed me early while I was breaking in my Toyo RA1s and getting used to the track!

;)

The GT3 that was there was really cool and the Cobra replica was cool on the track and was piloted by a good driver but the big shocker (in my mind) was the CGI Motorsports Evo. What a FUN car. I was not prepared to like it as much as I did (felt it was for the pimple and FnF crowd). Incredible stearing wheel, fantastic seats, unreal brakes, great grip, and VERY strong engine. Only mods where springs, sway bars, track wheels, and track tires and this thing could STOMP on a tight course like Gingerman. It has a different dynamic then the NSX (font engine, taller, AWD) but no less fun to learn and enjoy on the track IMO. Thanks go out to Phil of CGI for allowing me to experiance some HOT laps with the master of Gingerman himself.

Yeah.. Evo's are amazing cars. They were designed with one thing in mind.. performance. (sure wasnt looks :) )

Could you keep up with the GT3? Those things are FAST@!

That is not a street 360cs, that 360 is a fully preped racer that is probley not street legal.
Race windows, front clip, wing etc...
It would have been fun to see it running the track.

FYI: That's not a CS from what I can tell it looks like a Ferrari Challenge instead. Either that or the owner swapped the front bumper and installed a Challenge Wing in the back :D

The GT3 was in a different run group - but you are right - seriously fast cars. If you believe the videos from Top Gear the Ferrari CS and the GT3 are right on top of each other performance wise at the track and in the right hands should be faster then my 91 NSX.

Another thing to mention - CGI has so few cars per group and does such a nice job getting the right people in the right group - there where whole sessions where I might have only seen 1 or 2 cars close by (coming or going) the entire session!

How many HPDEs can you say that about?

FYI, A GT3 only needs some MPSC's and some aggresive alignment specs and it will walk away from a CS with equally good drivers at the track.

The CS comes with Pirelli Corsas's which are R compounds the GT3 uses the Pilot Sports 2 from the factory which is still a street tire, and they are pretty much even, given a proper tire it's a no contest in favor of the GT3.. (then again I am biased.. :D)

Looks like the blue vette is a Z06?? (i hope) How did it compare to the NSX's?

Last year I ran with the Z06 in the pictures and I am probably a little behind him at this track (subjective here) and the car walked away from me on the straights and in the turns. The Z06's are very formitable at the track IMO and I would probably be a few seconds faster in a Z06.

Actually - I would be a lot slower since you would have to kill me first to get me out of my NSX and put my body in the Z06.

If lap times are your thing - I would probably steer people towards the EVO or the new Elise. Phil is the owner of CGI and has had his NSX on the track for many moons. He tells me he was 4 seconds a lap faster in the EVO with about $2k in mods (wheels, tires, springs, sways). His NSX is lightly moded too. Gingerman is a very tight and short track and 4 seconds is HUGE out there. I still love my NSX for all it is but if I was looking for a track rat only - I would go with an Elise IMO followed by the Cobra replica, then the EVO. If you have to have only 1 car and have kids or commitments that force you to be able to have a lot of practicallity - the EVO is FAR above the other cars I have seen IMO. I am glad I had the opportunity to experiance it on the track and it is not something I will soon forget.

FYI,

Something worth noting, Mitsubishi has an ongoing policy for the EVO's where every car that has been at a track event or at an autocross gets a "restricted" warranty on the engine and drivetrain, so if anything goes on either one most folks will be left hanging by Mitsubishi NA even if the car had *zero* mods.

IMO - there are good dealers and bad dealers. There are people that know how to treat and work with people and there are not. I know an owner of an EVO with racing graphics and some minor mods who has had his car on the track all the time and makes no attempt to hide it from his dealer or anyone else. This owner brought his EVO in for rotor replacement and it was covered under warranty. The owner also made a point to bring the service manager and the EVO tech to lunch at the dealer he bought the car from close to the time he bought the car and before he had any claims. This owner loves people and is a gifted communicator. Bottom line - Mitsubishi is not much different from Honda/Acura in that some dealers are good and some are bad (maybe more good then bad with Acura but you get the point). Some people know that you attract more bees with honey then with vinegar. Regardless - Honda (and I am sure others) are rejecting claims for cars they think have been on the track http://www.pulpracing.com/honda.htm regardless of the PR they might / might not get so you had better treat your dealer right or buy a car you are not 100% expecting warranty for if you are going to the track IMO.

Soon we will all be driving old neons/miatas that we can scrap for junk as we are going to be abandoned by insurance and dealers alike IMO.

How can they tell if it has been tracked anyway?

The ECU/black box logs a number of things, including RPM and boost levels. By reviewing these, certain "high stress" usage patterns can only be achieved on a road course.

The 360 racecar at the CGI event on Monday is a Challenge car... it was campaigned briefly in the F Challenge series in Europe, then brought over here. It is nowhere near as "civilized" as the 360 CS (Challenge Stradale), which is a "streetable" variant. The REAL monster in the family is the 360GT, which has been pretty competitive in ALMS and Rolex, running up against the P911 GT3RS.

On another note, at another HPDE I was at this weekend, one of our Indy-area NSX friends brought his latest toy -- at 911 GT3 Cup car. That was a seriously set-up (and very FAST) car...

Great pics Nick. Thanks for posting. It was great to meet all of you guys. Hopefully we'll all be able to do it again! (Next time I may need a big brake kit though)

Yep. I had an Evo VIII for about two and a half months and ran the Car and Driver One Lap of America with it and can say it is an awesome drivers car. The only downside of the car was the terrible dealer and corporate network....but that is another story. If you want a low cost track car the Evo is a good place to start.

was the cobra replica a factor five kit? they seem to have the most popular setup. what mods to the kit to make it so track worthy?

It was this one:

http://www.superformance.com/

Talked to the owner and it had a 351 crate motor, full tube welded frame, all independent suspension, very very light, bilstein shocks, etc etc etc. Had a hard top and a soft top.

Owner was very nice and a good/smooth driver to boot.

EDIT - BTW - Check out this SuperPerformance video - it is awesome...

High res video
