I got an email on my campus email address today about http://www.studentsurveys.org/ and I didn't know what you guys thought about these. Are they scams or worth while? It makes sense that companies would pay these guys to collect data and what not, but it's a $30 fee to join. I emailed the guy and told him if he let me join for free, he could take $60 out of my first pay check. He responded with....

"Hi,
Our membership fee exists because it helps us advertise, research
companies that do surveys and bring to you the best paying of them! We
update these companies every two months and maintain our website! The
membership fee also includes 24 hours excellent customer support from
specially trained consultants that will answer all your questions and help
you
solve any problems that you encounter before, during, and after you
finish your surveys! You understand that all these services cost us a lot
of money and efforts!
Unfortunately, it is not possible for us to give you a trial period,
because in order to explore our database, which contains valuable
information and use our services you have to pay in advance!

Best regards,
Peter Senan"

I'm taking a summer class and I'm leaving in a month so I really don't have time for a real job, so I figured this might be fun to make some extra cash and take up some of my hours and hours of free time. So what do you guys think? Go for it or no?

The "survey" guys who ask for money are scammers. The real survey places get paid by the companies who need the surveys done. Once you pay these clowns, they'll likely give you their "valuable" list of legitimate survey companies. Don't pay someone to use google for you :)

Just do your own research. The real survey companies aren't hiding on some top secret list. They're right in front of you.

Also, don't expect to make huge amounts of money. If you want to do it just for fun that's one thing. But if you go into it expecting untold riches you may be disppointed. I've been doing online surveys for a few years now and I've probably made a total of $12 :D

well said....I participated in a group survey about "fuel addictives" and got paid $100 cash...not too bad for an hours work...

I've done several surveys over the years as well (almost all while still a poor college student). Everything from pizza and chocolate milk tasting to a panel on buying lottery tickets. I got paid anything from $30 to $120 per session.

BUT - they never asked me to join anything. Most marketing companies actively look for people.

Well all this has made my decision. I was on the fence whether to do it or not, but I think I'll choose to not pursue it. I think I'll search to do some surveys instead of paying these guys. Thanks for the info guys
