I'm a huge Angels fan (pretty much born and raised in Orange County, CA) and I was very saddened to hear about the passing of Gene Mauch.
Mr. Mauch (like Mr. Peter Jennings who passed away this weekend) lost his long battle with cancer.
Mr. Mauch managed the California Angels (back when they had a respectable name instead of the nonsense that Arte Moreno has created), the Philadelphia Phillies and the Montreal Expos. He was known, affectionately, as "the little general". Mr. Mauch got a bum rap here in S. CA as he managed the Angels through some of their most heartbrakingly disappointing seasons (including the 1986 post season loss to the BoSox (Donnie Moore anyone??) and the 1982 post season loss to the friggin' Brewers of all teams).
I grew up watching Mr. Mauch's team taking the field in the hey days of Grich, DeCinces, Carew and Lynn. I was quite sad to hear of his passing.
