What function does the strainer (part. no. 3) of the oil pump in the gearbox have?

I believe it functions as a rudimentary filter to keep large particles out of the transmission oil as it is circulated in the gearbox.

Ditto, it's a filter. Make sure to clean it. Be careful taking off the cover as it can break (don't ask me how I know ). I applied some Liquid Wrench around it the second time around  The more big chunks you have, the more you should be worried

However, after 70K miles or so, it's not uncommon to see it having picked up metal, it serves it's function well. Make sure not to damage the screen as you clean it up.

Thanks, guys. Too bad I refilled my gearbox a week ago without removing the filter and too bad it's not described in the SM as well. :(

You can probably still remove it without losing too much oil. You can use a pump to pump it back in, or take out hte fill hole and do it with a hose.. not that big of a deal.

Unless your car has 200K miles and hard track usage, I wouldn't worry about it too much..

Thomas,
If you jack up just the drivers side as high as your jack will go you can remove the filter, clean it and replace it without loosing any fluid. Coat the O-ring on the cap with silicone grease or just tranny fluid before replacing the cap. Don't over torque the bolt holding the cap in place.

Brad,

Thanks for your suggestion, I'll try it this way. What material is the filter out of? Paper? Is it better to clean or to replace it?

Thanks,
Thomas

Thomas,
It is a stainless steel mesh filter mounted in plastic top and bottom. I just spray it off with brake parts cleaner. Don't let it soak in the cleaner. The cleaner is hard on the plastic. Just spray it off and then blow dry with air. That is all there is too it. Any foreign material will be on the inside of the filter so flush accordingly.

I've just removed it and cleaned it. Actually, there was much to clean at all. I've drained the gearbox oil completely.

Thanks to all!
