Gauge Cluster problem

Hello everyone:

I was trying to put white face gauges last night and dismanteled my gauge cluster from the dash. I managed to put back the cluster and the white face over it but now my speedometer, odometer and the oil pressure gauge stopped working. The fuel gauge, voltmeter, tach and the temperature gauge works fine. I checked all connections and it seems that everything is plugged in.

Any sugestions on what has happened. Any advice would help. I called John Eagle Acura in Houston today and they told me that the speedometer alone is approx. $ 900.

Thanks in advance.

Best regards to all.

I think that you may have ruined the gauges. I did the same thing to mine, and now my fuel gauge is broken.

I think that ERZ Cars has a used gauge cluster for sale for something like $400. My computer died, so I lost the e-mail that they sent me with the pricing info.

Anyways, I see that you need the gauges I don't, and vice-versa. Would you be interested in sharing the costs of a used gauge cluster from ERZ? Maybe we can help each other out.

PM me or e-mail at [email protected] if you're interested!

Hope it works out for you w/ the electrician. The gauges are pretty fragile things, and there are TINY wires on the back side of them that break really easily.

If it doesn't work out, I'll hear from you soon I guess!

Mmm... i did a cf trim on mine a little while back, and i noticed that the studs (brass), which hold the individual gauges in, are also used to make the electrical connection to the gauges itself. Seems that the plastic which holds the studs is getting 'old' and are 'burst', and no longer hold the studds enough to prevent them from twisting with the screws you put in from the rear through the pcb. This results in the little wires from the coils to brake.
I repaired the little wires (if they are not long enough, you can take a winding of the coil, or extend the wire) and everything was fine.
Do notice that this wire is coated and won't solder without taking the coating off.
To prevent the studs from twisting again, i used some superglue on the studs and the plastic of the gauge itself.

What Dutch said...tighten down the screws in the back of the cluster....

Did you remove the original facings or did you just overlay them? (big difference!).

Sorry, don't have a pic. I did the overlay, which was a real PITA.

(in reply to reputations post, still figuring out how it works ;) )

Thanks everyone for your replies. This is an amazing forum. I simply tightened the screws at the back of the cluster and installed it very gently. Took the car for a spin and everything worked as before.

My friends, take my advice and dont experiment with the cluster. There are too many little fragile wires that can break and destroy the cluster. I guess I was lucky and nothing broke.

Thanks again for all the responses.
