Good question, and it wasn't easy or hard.
I first made the bezel to match the front of the unit. The unit has a couple of curves in it, and the pod doesn't, so the sheet metal bezel was the first item to make. Second there is an aluminum piece to match the angle of the vent to the angle of the bottom of the GPS which was around 18 deg. The aluminum piece was glued to the sheet metal bezel with epoxy. I used this because it was easier to align then to use screws. There are 2 steel straps that hold the GPS from falling back or up.
The steel strap was welded with a tap on the end to hold the unit down on its locating pin. I just machined the piece of aluminum to hold the pod to the dash, since there are several angles there that I didn't care to put screws through the pods mounting holes and have it unsupported underneath. Then the screws would come through the dash on an angle.. So now everything is supported flush..the pod to the bracket and the bracket to the dash.
Oh the bezel is attached with 3 plastic hi/low screws. The top of the bezel is held in place with spacers. Kinda hard to see unless I disassemble.. Basically the sheet metal just slides under a support with no where to go..

Brad..

I have a similar setup. Got any pics with the Nav pod on the dash with the Nav on? how much was the nav unit? Where was it purchased?

thanks st

No pics of the nav on the dash as of yet. I am stilll doing a mod to the original bracket to make use of the electrical contacts and will have to cut a 1/8 inch from the dash to make it fit. But that way I can use the dead reckoning feature without messing up the unit. I will take some pics later.

Costco sells them for $999: http://www.costco.com/Browse/Product.aspx?Prodid=11110199&whse=&topnav=&browse=

But read their notice regarding using suctions cups - I guess this would apply to all radar detectors as well. Definitely the NAV pod is the way to go, and that is a nice set-up Brad.

"NOTICE TO DRIVERS IN CALIFORNIA AND MINNESOTA: State law prohibits drivers in California and Minnesota from using suction mounts on their windshields while operating motor vehicles. Other state or local laws may also prohibit drivers from using suction cups on their windshields. (See California Vehicle Code Section 26708(a); Minnesota Statutes 2005, Section 169.71)"

HTH. YMMV.

Here is the final installation pic.
The small blue screen on the lower portion is my tire pressure monitor. I blew out a tire and didn't even know it, so now I feel much safer knowing that I have an alarm for that.. What's next ? V1 ?

That is awesome..is the volume audible? any problems with the operation. How about selling a kit like that..I would be interested.

Awesome job Brad - very nice clean install.

Quick question - that angle piece that goes under the pod screw holes - did you use double-sided tape or velcro or something on there to hold it to the dash, or is it just resting on it? Might be interested in having you knock out a similar bracket & spacers for me! (pay you of course)

Mine just sits there and to be honest doesn't really move but wouldn't mind something more secure - don't really want it going flying in an accident.

D'Ecosse

I used sheet metal strips which I then cut to size and bent them in the precise angle on the insides of the POD then double sided 3M tape to the dash as well as the brackets to the inside of the POD and its works wonderful I tried to see if it would come back off and it was nice and stuck down w/o opening holes in the dash which I wanted to avoid. One question was it you that lost your NAV pod clips and made up your own? mine came with two left side clips rather then L & R so now one of my screw holes is showing unless I find someone or somewhere that will sell the clips alone? Any suggestions......

I saw that in the 'wanted' ads - that was Stacy that moulded his own from Bondo - do a search on him in this stereo forum & you should find it.
But where did you source the pod? No return or exchange available?

I bought it off a fellow NSXPRIME member a few months ago, i recently deleted my inbox so I dont even remember who it was.....lol. It brought both clips brand new in there packages sealed just both were for the same side..

I figured someone would ask about me making something.
I would love too but I didn't even have time for my installation.
Still trying to find time to do the wiring.
But if you need help in doing it yourself, I can give you some pointers, like instead of machining out the aluminum base, you can probably use a piece of wood and with simple hand tools have something just as good..
Oh and the speaker is now inclosed in the pod but at 100% volume its not bad. I'm adding a speaker with an amp in the dash with a manual volume control so I don't have to screw with the digital controls.
And sorry guys for the multiable post, I still have to learn this forum stuff..

I'm interested in that tire pressure monitor........ I already have 30/35 series tires so I wouldn't know if I lost air....

The pressure monitor was probably the best thing that I have bought for any vehicle. I check it everytime I drive, you just roll a couple of feet to turn it on and push the button.. I bought it from Tire Rack, its called Smart Tire. I got the remote head for mine, that's what you see in the pic. Strap on those babies inside your wheels and your on your way.. Now who out there checks their tire pressure more than once a day, week or even month ?

I was going to use tape but I wanted my pod to be up against the dash as much as possable, so the angle block is screwed through the top to a plate underneath the dash( used as a big washer) that has what are called PEM nuts installed, which are just nuts that are crimped into the aluminum plate, so they don't fall off, So the angle block is sandwiched to the dash. There is no way it is going to come loose. Not even if someone wants to steal it, they would have to know what screws I am using to loosen them up, then it will just slide out!

BTW guys, this unit works great.
I had some time to drive to Orange County from Pasadena last week.
All I put in was the city and it found where I wanted to go. When i was within a few blocks I saw my destination and parked.
Then I needed to get to Disneyland. Its already programmed into memory.
It got me there no problems.
I also programmed all of the Harley dealers. No DVD required for this unit. All you need is the Internet and you can update your software for free!
And the sexy voices are a nice touch.
I have a 1 gig SD card for my MP3 music. That works great too.
And it looks like OEM, whatever that looks like as there are no switched showing, not even the IR /on off switch which is hidden but can still be used by the remote.

The 7500 and also 7200 have a built in FM transmitter which you can use to transmit right to your FM receiver in your car. That way you can hear the driving instructions and play MP3s and hook up a DVD player to watch videos while piping the sound into your sound system. It's a bit more hassle to set up, you have to tune the transmitter and your stereo to the same frequency, but it's got that feature.

Brad can you please post some in-car pics?

There is one pic already here on this post.
I tried to upload another one but it didn't go thru.

Brad are you using this as just the nav? I am thinking of replacing my radio with this thing alltogether. Have you tried running line out for audio? how are you doing the SD card music? with its built-in speaker?

I tried to use the FM audio but it didn't sound too good. Yes I do have an SD card with all of my MP3 music which you just download from the computer.
The built in speaker is just one speaker, so no stereo there.
What I did was built a stereo amp (7 watts) and hid it in the console, running wires out for seperate speakers. Now I can listen to the MP3's without having the car on, or I can listen to Karen without going through the built in speaker, which is now hidden in the pod! I have a seperate volume control that I have instant access too, without having to rely on the digital control built in which is not easy to turn up and down every minute cause of noise or having the windows down or whatever. Now I just turn up or down instantly.

You mean the FM transmitter? have you tried the XM? If you were to just do volume using the 3.5" mini jack, how hard it is to control volume? what is involved? Is it stupid to think this can replace my factory system completely (with amps and speakers)?
