If you are ever in a pinch and you do not have one of the ultra low floor jacks (like the aluminum one offered at Costco and / or Harbor Freight) take the front wheels or casters off of your standard floor jack and use it.
Call you crazy, but those wheels serve a definate purpose. As you lift the car, the wheels allow the jack to slide under the car, thus moving the fulcrum under the load point. I would not want to be the one puting a jack stand under the car when the jack sling shots out and the car comes tumbling down like a ton of...car!
But it was used just in a pinch. Not a practice I would conduct on a regular maintenance interval. Also with just the front set of wheels off of the floor jack it still was creeping underneath the car as it went up. I just made my neighbor (that I do not like that much) put his hand underneath the car for jack stand placement. ROFL
