A little history:
I have a Comptech PG1 clutch in my '92. I'm not exactly sure of its mileage but my best guess is 15-20k miles. I bought the car 6 mos and 5k miles ago. The clutch has shown no sign of slipping in that time and has always been very grabby (as a PG1 should be) until just a couple months ago.
The problem: (This has happened maybe 3 or 4 times)
Out of the blue the clutch will begin to slip and go "out" very rapidly. Today it was so bad that I had to take a backroad just to avoid stopping in traffic. In a distance of 3 miles (10 stops or so) it went from just fine to the point it could barely take off from a stop. If I would let the clutch all the way out giving it a low steady rpm it would start to grab very slowly, like someone were feathering the clutch way too much. Once I got to up to speed even the slightest tap of the accelerator would raise the rpm's but without any reaction from the car. This has happened before (not quiet to this extent) and after sitting a while (overnight or even a few hours) it will be back to its normal, grabby self. What in the heck could be causing this?
When it happens:
This has happened too infrequently to know for sure what, if anything, triggers it. But I believe it's acted up after I've feathered it a little too much from a stop. I certainly don't ever ride this clutch. Between the heavy clutch and small amount of play, embarrasing stalls are the norm for me even after driving it 5k miles. Though there may be varrying opinions on how to baby a clutch, I think I've been babying this thing about as much as one could. I know this is no daily-driver street clutch (I'd rather have oem myself) but I bought it like this and would like it to last as long as possible - (delaying that expensive little replacement job).
Anyone have any ideas as to what's going on here??

I should mention that I have never smelt a burning clutch. And sure enough the car worked just fine this evening. I thought I'd take it out and get on it a little tonight to see if it was really ok. There was no slipping except one small instance in 2nd gear. All other take-offs were slip free (including 2nd gear). Is this a sign of a dirty main shaft? I need to get this taken care of as the first DE of the year is in 5 weeks.

I finally called Shad over at Comptech and he figured it out right away. It was a bad adjustment on the clutch pedal. There was no play in the pedal (1/4" play needed per the shop manual) so it was never fully releasing - therefore backpressure built up and would eventually not let the clutch fully engage. The pressure would bleed after a few hrs thus explaining why it went back to normal. I did the adjustment and its like having a totally different clutch - much easier to use!
Thanks Shad!
