Fuel slosh?

I'll post this question separately since my other thread hasn't seen any play ;).

I started with 1/2 tank, but noticed towards the end of a 15 minute session at little talladega (on stock-size street tires no less) that my fuel gauge was ready less than 1/8 tank. Once I came in at the end of the session it crept back up to over 1/3 tank.

(I've never run into this issue with my MR2 because the tank is mounted longitudinally in the car and has a rounded "V" shape at the bottom. I can run an autocross event with less than a gallon of gas in the car.)

How does one keep track of how much gas is actually in the tank, and at what point will an NSX typically begin to starve during track use?

i cant speak for tracking the car... but at autocrosses i have been able to run the car with about 1/8th of a tank with no fuel starve issues at all.

The same thing happens in my Integra Type R as well as my NSX.

I've never had it starve, but I don't think I've run it down lower than 1/8 tank actual. I don't usually run it all the way down.

I usually have a pretty good idea of how long I can go. I normally start the day with a full tank, and then I typically get somewhere around nine track miles per gallon, so I can use 15 gallons driving around 130-140 track miles. I know I'll need to fill it when the trip odometer gets up around 130 miles, so I plan my day accordingly. (For example, if I put on 80-90 track miles in the morning, and expect to do the same in the afternoon, I'll leave during the lunch break to fill the car, so I don't have to miss track time to fill it later.) If there is reasonably-priced gas at the track, then I don't have to plan it for the lunch break; I'll just fill it before whichever session would otherwise run me over that 130-140 limit.

Thanks guys.

I'll have to remember to do a mileage calculation next time I'm at a track so I have something to go off of. I just want to avoid getting carried away and having to mooch a gas can at some point.

I did start a session on 1/4 tank and probably wound up at 1/8 or so and I experienced no fuel starving.

If you're not getting fuel starvation, keep on running. The gauge will show less than what you actually have, but start to keep track and plan it.

9mpg is great fuel mileage on track!

I do what Ken suggested and that is run a certain distance on track from full and refill after that milage. For me about 105 miles is my comfort zone. While running the gauge will be near E at anything less than a 1/4 tank.

I may be thinking of my Integra Type R. I mean, I know that's what I get in that car, and I'm not sure whether I get 9 mpg or 7 mpg in the NSX, but it's something in that range. It's been a while since I did a track event in the NSX. Also, mine is bone stock so one with forced induction or other power mods may use more fuel.

Same for me, it will indicate less than it really is. Once in the paddock, it will become slowly to a normal indication.

Running slick tires, I had fuel starvation once when running a little bit less than 1/4 of the tank.
