another question... i sealed the gauge threads with permatex high temp thread sealant... i can't smell any gas when it's under pressure.

But when the car is off, the gauge slowly goes back to 0 psi from 42. Is this normal, or should the system stay under 42psi pressure when the car is off?

With an aftermarket fuel pump that is pretty typical. They seem not to have the check valve that the OE pump has. It's a reason that it can help to wait for the ~2 sec priming cycle to finish before cranking.

Same here with a Walbro 255.
