Front Hub Nuts

I'm replacing my front wheel studs to accommodate 15mm Spacers. I've read all the procedures, and am clear on the concept. Here's the question. The manual calls for replacing the front hub nuts (self-locking), and the dealer wants about $8 per nut for new ones. There are 8 of them. Is it necessary to replace them, and if so, can I get self-locking nuts that will work from another source? Any advice will be appreciated.

Technically these should be replaced after one torquing - I'm not sure that it would be a serious problem to re-use them though. This is holding your hub on however, so in this case the insurance is cheap!

Does anyone know is this an all-steel or a nylon insert nut?

The Bolt Depot has 10 x 1.25 Nylon insert @$0.75 ea.
If you shop around the 'Net for Metric hardware, I'm sure you can find all-steel also.

Just to be sure, you mean the four nuts that hold the hub assembly into the front knuckle, correct? If so, retorque properly and they will be fine. If you are really worried you could use a drop of blue locktite (ONLY BLUE) on each thread. I did not replace these, and had my car apart 4 years ago:). I just retorqued to spec.

You will be good to go.

Thanks Ken and Larry. I ordered some nuts for the website you recommended Ken, and will await an answer to the question as to whether or not they're nylon inserts. Yer, Larry, it is the nuts on the front hub that attach it to the knuckle. I like your idea about the loktite. Any other ideas out there would be appreciated, as always.

I realized when I reread this that maybe those nuts are special coated. Check if they have a slight green tint. That may be why the cost is high from Honda. If so, I would definately reuse them.

The nut you listed above is only a class 8 and is probably not up to spec. I think honda uses mostly class 10 and 12 hardware in these critical areas. Class 8's may be OK for attaching a door handle or windshield wiper arm, but I'd be really really apprehensive about using it on your suspension.

NOTE: Metric class 8 is NOT the same as SAE grade 8. The numbering schemes are different and the metric class 8 is only equivalent to SAE grade 5, so beware.

Did the job today, and reused the existing nuts, with a dab of thread lock. The rest of the job went pretty smooth, and what a difference 15mm makes. I am thrilled, and it gave me a chance to scrub the inside of my rims
