It depends on if something is leaking or not. A little will leak out naturally, but it will take years. Does it blow cold? If it does, you don't need freon and I wouldn't worry about it. If it isn't cold you should get some. It's pretty cheap if you car is a 94 or newer. If it's just blowing hot air, chances are you have a leak some where.
