Freon (a/c)

It depends on if something is leaking or not. A little will leak out naturally, but it will take years. Does it blow cold? If it does, you don't need freon and I wouldn't worry about it. If it isn't cold you should get some. It's pretty cheap if you car is a 94 or newer. If it's just blowing hot air, chances are you have a leak some where.

Air conditioning systems use a gas refrigerant. The '91-92 NSX came from the factory with a system that uses Freon, also known as R-12, as the refrigerant. The '93-03 NSX comes with a system that uses R-134a. Because the manufacture of Freon was banned in the 1990s, carmakers switched over to R-134a. That's why R-12 is so expensive now.

If you have a '91-92 NSX and the air conditioning is not effective, it would be wise to convert your system from R-12 to R-134a. Acura sells a kit for the conversion, for around $60.

I have a 94.

When I turn the a/c on, it doesn't blow really cold air. But I notice just a slight difference in temperature between the a/c vs. regular fan air. so, the a/c IS working just not optimally.

Think I should change it now?

(BTW, do dealers keep this stock or special order? )

I had my local Acura dealer do it for $200 w/tax. I believe the time was appx. 1 hour $100 + $80 parts (including 134a refil) + tax.

I purchased an analog meter to test pressure and every 6 months or so I fill it up with a $4 can. A lot cheaper then the $1800 quote to replace the evaporator!
