I found a used tranny online for a 91 NSX for $1500 shipped to my door. It has 100k miles on it. Think it's worth it to purchase it and do the short gears etc? It could be nice to have a spare tranny. Just wondering if that's a good deal or not. I would make sure it's out of the snap ring range of course.

I'm figuring the PO didn't know what these go for or else it's totally mashed. Sounds like an incredible deal if it's in decent shape.

I think that's an okay price, although not an unusual bargain by any means, especially considering the mileage on it.

I guess I don't understand why you're considering getting it. If you don't need to have your transmission replaced (and it sounds like you don't), are you just getting it so that you can stock spare parts for your car...? If so, I wouldn't bother. If you want short gears, and your own transmission is okay, just put them in your own transmission (along with the transmission case, if yours is in the snap ring range); there's no need to replace the whole thing.

Do you have a pic of the trans WITH the serial number on it? Do you know if it is a snap-ring trans? With 100K miles I would think it probably needs an overhaul.

If you plan on rebiulding it, then doing a swap to minimize your down time, that would work. Plan on $1000 more then you are thinking now:), since syncro's etc, add up quickly. Short Gears/R&P add more$$:). If it needs a case add $750.

Also if you plan this yourself count on $400 or so in special tools, unless you have access to them elsewhere.

The above numbers are all budgetary, you may save a few bucks depending on where you order parts, but if you use these numbers you will not come up disappointed, or broke.
