In all my life I never thought I'd ask a question about exhaust tips......

anyway..

I've done a search on the flowmaster exhaust... I found most of what I was looking for.. the part number.. sound clips.. seems fairly good..
Although I need to know about NSX FoYoAss had some sound clips and his sounded really well...

linked here

but then there's this one:
another one

search for kelly joe..

that sounded completely different...

Did someone take out their cat?? Just wondering...

Also, anyone know where I can find tips that look like the dali racing one??

like this:

Thanks for all your help.

VBNSX, you are right, our sound clips do sound different. I'm not sure why(I have cats on), but I might have an answer. It might have something to do with the size of the piping used? That's my only thought? Or, maybe we recorded the sound from different spots? Maybe KellyJoe made the clips with the recorder next to the exhaust or directly behind it?
Anyways, I love the way my Flowmaster sounds. I still find myself downshifting and reving while going under underpasses. :D I don't think you will be disappointed.
As far as tips go, you can buy some like mine. They look similar to the ones on the Dali Website that you refered to...

Some better pics I dug up of the tips...

sorry, the tips show dirty in some of the pics.

Thanks for your quick response...

what size piping did you use??? Did you match it to the muffler???

Thanks again,
-x-

VB, I believe the Flowmaster has 2.5 inch inlets/outlets and the OEM pipes are 2 inches. So, I believe we used 2 inch pipes running into the Flowmaster muffler from the car(expanded to 2.5 at the weld on to the FM). And then, 2.5 inch outlets. Does that make sense?

how come you didn't port match the size from the cat on??? Your piping is still restrictive....

Just kinda curious...

Thanks again,
-x-

Well, to be honest, I'm not sure what size piping my muffler guy used. The reason for the difference was because the OEM is half an inch smaller then the Flowmasters in/outlet piping.
This maybe all in my head, but the car feels faster with the Flowmaster rather then the straight thru pipes. Maybe due to back pressure? I dunno. What I had before was a Comptech system which blew a huge hole in it! p.o.s. So, the car felt slow, even with the opened up muffler. Those are just my impressions.

As far as the recording I did goes, it was made very crudely in my basement with the mic about 4-6 inches from the tip and to the right so as not to be directly behind the tip. Cats installed and stock other than the Flowmaster. Nothing to add about piping and such but have since removed it for an Anytime/Borla from SOS. I was having a problem with the fit/finish of the Flowmaster and just couldn't get it to look right in my eyes. Best sound for the price by far. Just be careful who you get to install it and remember it might move on you after a few heat cycles. Mine did.

Z,

I looked at that website you linked up. Do you think those DTM tips will fit in the exhaust cutout on the bumper? I know you mentioned to me that you could not find a set of dual tips that would fit in that spot.

By the way, those JCWhitney tips do look like the ones the Dali exhaust uses. I really like the look. The only look I find slightly more attractive would be dual tips. I am worried about the fitament of these tips though is why I may still go with the four inch tips Z went with.

Could you please be a bit more specific about the "fit and finish"? After all, the exhaust is almost completely hidden aside from the tips. Did your exhaust begin to sag? Tips not even?

Any other advice other than finding someone good to do it? How should we go about finding someone good to do the job in our respective areas?

Thanks a lot KellyJoe.

Exactly what happened.

I suggest calling around to some local performance parts shops and see if they'll recommend someone that does custom installs. Someone that can show you some work rather than just talk a good game. I was the sucker that day....:D

Sorry to hear, but I was just looking at the Flowmaster the other day. No signs of mis-alignment! Maybe due to a bad install.

Edwardo, I was looking at those DTM tips also. In fact I ordered some that seemed narrow enough, but they were just too long. If you can see from my pics below, on my set up, the pipes exiting the FM turn almost immediately outward. If I installed the DTM tips, the tips would have stuck out beyond the rear bumper. That's why I decided to pass and chose these simple, short style tips.

Have Flowmaster on mine as well

I have a Flowmaster custom piped exhaust (however, the previous owner had it installed, so all I know is that he got it used from a guy down in FL).

As you can see from the pics, the exhaust had sagged on one end (unfortunately didn't notice it until I had bought it), but they just had to heat up the pipes and bend back so it wasn't hitting the rear valance on the side.

But the tips are cool. :)

That's exactly the problem on mine. Otherwise a great exhaust. Probably could have had it heated, bent or "persuaded" back into shape but was just discouraged and had the extra cash for one with a lifetime warranty. Don't let anything I've posted turn anyone away from Flowmaster. Like I said, just be very picky who installs it.

When it came off I did however notice some surface rust on the factory welds. One might want to take some preventative measures before getting one installed or just keep an eye on it and treat as needed.

well this has been very informative for me...

thanks a bunch a guys..

I'm gonna get it and tell the people who do the install that it had better be perfect..

=P

thanks,

This is probably why the sound samples seem very different...
