I had my first flat tire last week in 8yrs of driving (i've helped with other people's flats before... just not my own). I had just dropped a mate home and was on my way home at 2am when i heard a "tink tink tink" sound. Pulling over, i checked the rear left wheel to find a 3 inch nail poking out.

There didn't appear to be any air leaking, but given the fact the road I was driving home on had poor street lighting further ahead I decided it was best to change the tire there and then. I tell you, there's nothing more fun than changing a tire at 2am when all you want to do is go to bed. :D

Here's the amazing part... I took the wheel over to a shop who pulled the nail out and checked the pressure. The wheel was perfectly fine! Obviously the nail had pierced the rubber on an angle and hadn't gone all the way through. Amazing!

Thought I'd post some pictures because it was pretty freaky being such a LONG nail and all. Anyone else got some good flat tire stories???

That's amazing, Neo! I'd be worried that the affected spot is not as strong as before. Perhaps that tire should become your new spare. However, since the tire was never "flat," does this mean that your streak is still unbroken?

Once when I was a teenager and driving home late at night (2 am or thereabouts), my car got a flat tire. The tire was completely flat. But, the road was narrow and dangerous with no street lights or shoulder and I didn't want to risk my life by changing the tire on the side of the road. So, I turned on my flashers and idled the car along, all the way home. It took me about 2 hours to go 6 miles or so. I didn't see another car on the whole way home. The rim suffered no damage, and the tire visually came out OK too, but of course I didn't use it again.

I am concerned the affected spot won't be as strong, but they aren't that old. Maybe I should just finish them off with some massive burnouts, drifts and donuts??? :D

That's also an amazing story of yours. A few years back I was with my Dad on the way to my sister's 21st birthday when we got a flat. We had to drive off the main road too. My Dad was quite anxious not to drive too far on the flat tire - which i didn't understand. What shocked me was when we pulled over how hot the rim was (you couldn't touch it) and the side wall of the tire didn't look too healthy either. All this from just driving around the corner off the main road. So the fact your rims weren't damaged in your story after driving much further is a miracle.

Ironic that I just saw this thread.....today I was getting the '91 NSX out of storage to take it in to the body shop to get the suspension fixed when it happened. I heard the repeated 'thud-thud' sound, and got out to see one of my *BRAND NEW* rear tires FLAT!!! ARGH!!

I was bummed....but I figured it was no big deal since the NSX comes with an air compressor in the trunk. Well, I hop out and grab the compressor, plug it in and wait....and wait....and wait. DANG IT!! My lighter socket does not work!! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!

Now I am getting really sad because this is the first drive in one of my NSX's in about 6 months and here I sit with a flat tire, in the middle of nowhere, with an air compressor I cannot use. Luckily I was able to limp the car to safety and borrow an air compressor from a friend of mine who (luckily) lives out in the middle of the nowhere I was in. I still have no idea how this one new tire went flat...but oh well. :)

NEO! You drive a *gasp* holden?! Please let it not be a camira or your banned from the forums! Lol Or worse, twenty four hours of watching "The Castle." :D

Mitch, I'm shocked you don't have an air compressor. I've got 2 in my garage for these emergencies.

I also drove my 240SX with a flat tire once before in the rain without knowing that it was flat. When I got to my friend's house I saw that the tire was gone, but the rim was fine, interesting enough. I had driven 30 miles across town on the freeway part of the way, and the rim was fine.

Stay safe!!

It's not mine. :D

NsXMas : far out?! which wheel was it? front or rear? rear i find harder to notice... a front flat seems to make the handling very heavily to one side.

I have an air compressor at my house, but the storage area where I keep my cars in the winter ('Area 51') did not have one that I could find. All in all, not my best of days. :)
