The early F355s are somewhat notorious for problems w/ valve guide design, exhaust manifold / headers, and catalytic converter problems. I think the latter two are often caused by the first? Anyway it gets expensive if you have to start replacing those parts.

I would avoid the '95s unless you can determine that they have been updated to address those problems. I think most of these were sorted out by around '97.

Enjoy!

Weird, the 95 6-Speed is more expensive than the 99 F1, only a 10k mile difference too. Maybe location is a factor???
Anyway, like Lud said the early ones had problems, make sure they've been fixed/updated.
Other than that my answer is: Get whichever one is Yellow
biggrin.gif
And then you have to let me drive it, it is my favorite car after all.
The Spyder is just plain awesome, but the GTS does look really good for a targa top style car.

I vote for #3. I personally think the 355 is much better looking with the Hardtop but as you live in the west taking the top off is a must!

I think that the Spyder actually looks better with the top up and kinda loses that awesome, fierce look when the top is down, so I really like the combination of coupe look with the flexability to take the top off.

I also like the F1 in #3, although there were problems early on, it is truly unique and the standard for today's most advanced race cars.

Now having said all this; the decision would certainly need to be balanced against the more cerebral issues such as maintenance history, color combination and overall care and condition of the car.

Lastly a CA car is much more likely to have seen very little inclement weather.

My .02, Good luck!

I agree the coupe "looks better" Targa is the best of both worlds "kinda'".

As for the spider it's more for look than practicality to me.

I prefer the better purist driver approach vs's the classy look. All the cars maintain the lines better w/ top up or on IMO.

I am gearing towards the 99' for obvious reasons "but" unsure of the issues w/ the F-1 tranny.

Can someone please fill me in on the F-1 facts.???

A state issues a title to provide a vehicle owner with proof of ownership. When a title is issued to the first owner of a new vehicle, CARFAX labels the title record with "First Owner".

Lease
When someone leases a car from a dealer, the dealer actually sells the vehicle to a leasing company. The leasing company then collects payments for the vehicle from the new owner for 24, 36, 48 or more months. A leasing company can be an independent car dealer or a car manufacturer.

New Owner Reported
When a vehicle is sold to a new owner, the Title must be transferred to the new owner(s) at a Department of Motor Vehicles. CARFAX identifies this event and labels the title record as "New Owner Reported".

I own a 95 355 and IMO it is the best year to get because a little more power, better heads, better sound, better gearing and it is also the fastest. The 95 motor is the one they use on the challenge cars. I have never had a single problem with mine--no valve guides, nothing. Mine also has 26,000 miles on it.

------------------

The cluch in the F1 tranny's are abused to no end and its common to have to change it out in as little as 10k, heard of a few freak scenerios where it was 5k and 7k, but, these might have been tracked too.

F1 seems to be becoming more of a standard since a lot of the 360's ordered are with F1. Enthusiasts are gun shy on those until the 360 replacement is released, hopefully, with a revised F1 system.

Truth be told, 6-speed just seems like the better buy for resale value and in driving pleasure. Unless your doing everything to shave off a few 10ths of a second at the track, stick with the 6-speed!

I appreciate everyones input and link to all the info threads. After a lot of contemplation and balance of price ,reliability, etc etc.

I purchased a 99' F355 F-1 GTS today.

I drove it and love it w/ the F-1 tranny.
I drove the 6 speed to and IMO liked the F-1 tranny better. The purchase price also played a part (in the event the clutch get's smoked.

Again thank you!!

I just saw this thread (yes, I have been away for a while). Can't believe asking price for a '99 was $80K. Jeez, the prices of these bad boys have really fallen. Let us know what the final purchase price was, Bill, if you feel comfortable. Even if paid this asking price for a '99, you got a steal IMO. Most '99's that I've seen are typically hovering around $100K.

Regards.

I've said it once, and I'll say it again. Picking up a MY99 355 for $78K is a steal. Congratulations!! The fact that this is a GTS, and therefore should command a $5 - $7K premium over the GTB makes it an even sweeter purchase.

Regards.

Could I ask why so cheap? $78k for a 99 f1 is way cheap. Is DC doing that bad? Or, how did you get such a deal? Anyways, congratulations on a great car at a great price!
