After warning letters were sent to owners 60 days ago (below), teams of Kevlar-armed Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers are seizing grey market Nissan Skyline GT-Rs imported by Kaizo according to GTR USA Blog. Below, why it happened.

Last August the letter below was sent from the Southern California United States Attorney's office stating that "the referenced Nissan Skyline automobile... is not in compliance with U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and U.S. Department of Transportation requirements." The letter goes on to state that the vehicles can't be operated and the feds are coming for them within 60 days. They weren't lying.

According to GTR USA, two R34s and an R32 have already been seized and, if the letter above is an indication, an R33 is on the list.

Importing vehicles without the appropriate credentialing from the appropriate U.S. agencies almost always ends up with cars being seized by the government, especially Skylines, and people getting fined or jail time. In this case, the cars were imported by Kaizo under a special exemption for automotive parts. They brought over the shells and drivetrains separately and then reassembled them. They were then, apparently, registered under the law as SB 100, which is for kit/show cars. This exemption allows vehicles not driven frequently to be registered without smog checks.

We have a feeling these cars are being driven frequently.

The U.S. Attorney ended his letter "Very Truly Yours" but it looks like those Nissans are now "Very Truly His."

I heard this awhile back and also heard that GTR owners were frantically trying to unload them on unsuspecting buyers. I met a guy about 2 weeks ago with one at a Nissan carshow. I said I had always wanted one but he was not intrested in selling at the moment. I gave him my number and I see where he's called several times in the last 2 days. I did'nt answer since I figure he probably got his letter.

Perfectly reasonable. The government doesn't get any tax revenue from those sort of operations, so they will seize them and fine you instead. If it was done legally and driven accordingly, I'd be enraged.

That being said, if you more or less sneaked the car in and drove it illegally, you had to see this coming.

My NSX is exempt from smog/emissions testing, thus the test pipes. I am, however limited to 6000 miles in 2 years in NJ.

This is a topic that I have been following very closely for years. I have been extremely close to buying an R32 on two different occasions. The first was through Motorex right as their shit was hitting the fan (glad I dodged that bullet) and the other time was just two years ago when I was trying to get one of the Motorex DOT bond released cars. Now because the government has a hard on for screwing over the Skyline community I have decided to wait my turn until 2014 when I can legally import a 25 year old 1989 R32 GT-R. Get one from Canada and avoid all the hassles and costs of getting one now.

I feel bad for those Skyline owners who obtained their cars through legal means (not quasi-legal sketchy means) and have to deal with this constant battle.

Couldn't you just hand over the plates and call it an off-road only competition vehicle?

The problem isn't the street legality of the cars...its that they were brought into the country illegally by skirting around customs. The cars were to be exported within 60 days or be confiscated and most likely crushed.

Seems like the feds would let you pay taxes of some sort to keep the car as a "track" car in order not to lose it. Everyone wins here.

That would be the reasonable and logical thing to do. However, I get the sneaking suspicision that the Feds are setting this certain model up as an example of what not to do.

I can only imagine that there's so much bad blood between the feds and all of the Skyline importers that they levy a certain degree of hate towards going after those cars. Grey market Porsches seem to fly under the radar well enough

If you are looking to rid of them, Export them to Canada! They are OK here. I see one just about every day.

Yes , but only R32 and early R33 , the R34 is too new... What a waste of a beautiful car , Why after geting a letter like that , would a person not export the car immediately???
