Factory NSX-R: better than gold?

Have any of you guys been following the trend in resale values for factory NSX-Rs in Japan? I often check out carsensor.net to consume some of the best automotive porn available online, it looks like prices have increased dramatically in the past few years. It used to be that an NA1 R could be had for the equivalent of 50,000US$, they're more like twice this today! Of course the appreciating yen has something to do with it, but it really looks as though these rare cars are great investment in today's troubled market.

Surely more exciting than gold anyway!

This red NA2 R is the tits: http://www.carsensor.net/usedcar/detail/CU0353891314/index.html?TRCD=200002

I spoke with my mechanic last weekend at a party.
He visited the European mainland opening of the new McLaren dealership in Brussels of the McLaren MP4-12C.
Seems that several of the McLaren guys are driving and still are wildly enthousiastic about the NSX(-R).

He told me that there is a trend where 2002+ NSX are bought up from all over the world and shipped back to Japan for very high prices.

that is a grip of nsx's, dammmmnnnnnn. I would love to go there and see those cars.

My wife and I flew over to Route-KS just a month and a half ago for business.

The Red NSX-R (2004 - 31,000km) is certainly nice though not the star of the show. It costs 19M YEN (USD 246,673.15 @ Today's Rate) nonetheless, just for your information.

Route-KS' "Symbol Car" is a 2006 NSX-R in Berlina Black (last of 5~6 units built, ultra rare), final batch of Production, 802km on the clock. Price: Not-for-Sale.

Very interesting....

Correct! My 2002 Imola Orange Pearl and the 2005 White Tan from Hawaii were bought up by a collector/re-seller in Hong Kong ( I know not Japan) but he mentioned the same.

There's high demand for 2002+ NSX's...

so would my 2000 GPW/onyx with 67k be wanted by these overseas brokers/collectors or do pre-facelift NA2 are not cared for?

zaid

I honestly think that in 20 years, some crazy collectors, obsessed with the NSX, from China, India and Russia are going to be buying 40% of all the nicest NSX's from Primers .. @ CRAZY prices, get ready to resist!

In 20 years though.

The thing that is going to drive NSX prices up are low mileage original cars.
I purchased my 1993 about 6 years ago with very few mods and now it has a turbo. The fact is, there are dozens if not hundreds of great performance, handling and asthetic mods to make these car's better. Better but farther and farther away from the original.

Think of all the people that made their rare 60's vette's "better". It's the one's with 20k on the clock, full documentation, dealer records, original paint, show awards and obscure options(color combo's) that push these prices deep into the six figures. That being said they made nearly as many Vette's in 1957 than NSX's in the USA for the whole production run.

I think that within 5 years, and you can quote me on this; an early nearly mint, lower mileage original, unmodified NSX could easily bring 80k. My gosh, just look at all the crashed NSX's in the last 6 months. That fact alone makes even accident history track cars worth a few bucks more. Our cars are one of a kind, limited production vehicles that will never go out of style.

It would be well worth the time an effort for Honda to keep the tooling and parts for these cars............but they probably won't in the very near future.

If I had the Dough I'd also buy for investment a MP4-12C.

Tell him to call me. Mine is always for sale at the right price.

I know that exact LHD 2002 Imola Orange and it's been in HK for over 1.5 years now.

The owner does want to sell it but can't import it to China. Only the people in China with the right connection can import it back.

So last time I checked, the car has been sitting in the warehouse waiting for the right guy to buy it. No luck so far and there is a good reason behind it, the owner is asking for an unrealistic price.

He also imported like 7 or 8 RHD '03 and '04 NSXs from the UK. Sales for those aren't doing well either because of the insane price tags. I had set my eyes on one of those 4 months ago but the deal didn't go through.

In Japan, LHD NSXs are priced a lot lower than RHDs.

What is the range of prices of these 03's and 04's?

Yeah the NSX-R is definitely a car of all cars... I can just imagine a low mileage mint condition will pull a nice premium.

Will definitely be a museum high dollar collector car someday

kookoo4nsx,

At first (i.e. 1.5 years ago), HKD 1.18M and HKD 1.28M respectively.

Half a year ago, HKD 990k and HKD 1.08M respectively.

During the whole time, only like 3 were sold.

I have looked at that particular Imola Orange NSX, its in superb condition... but yea the dealer is asking insane prices. And yet he also has a few of those sitting here for sale the past few years now, this just makes you think what do they really do.

I said once, I'll say it again: even the boat anchor wheels will come back in vogue and it'll be b/c so many will want an original NSX.

Don't hate on my '91 stylin' wheels yo!

Can't wait to get a set of good rims though...really just have to pick out a set...too many to choose!

I have considered the idea of stockpiling NSXs. Honestly, there are great deals to be had out there right now, especially on cars in the 40k - 50k mile range.
