Factory CD changer

Hi, I just purchased a '93 NSX supposedly everything is original (2 previous owners). The factory CD changer in the truck seems like it doesn't work anymore. (i.e. I pressed "mode" and only have FM/AM no CD, I press eject button on the CD changer and it does not move no matter if the car is on/off/engine on etc). Question:
1) Is it easier to replace the CD changer or just get an aftermarket in-dash CD- player? If factory, anyone has the part number?

2) Does anyone have a diagram of the dash assembly? (not sure how easily is it to take the factory unit out) in case i am installing an aftermarket unit.

Thanks!

1) yes. i would check the cd changer cable from hu and follow it to the trunk. maybe something is loose.

2) NSXe-repair.com
full detail how to remove the console by BrianK.

3) opt for the grom audio ipod/iphone adapter and use your phone as your radio.. or USA-Spec adapter.. whichever u want.. grom is cheaper.

head unit #: 39100-SL0-A04 TUNER ASSY. (AM/FM/CAS) (ALPINE) 001 1993 NSX 2682.72

cd changer#: 08A06-162-521 CD CHANGER
( May Have Been Discontinued ) 001 1993 NSX 670.00

hope this helps.

Thanks for these detail reply! The part number is very useful. I am going to check the above and by taking the radio out/inspect to see where it is breaking first, at this point i rather replace the factor radio with an aftermarket unit.

Is it worthwhile to do it myself or just have some professional do it? I am located in central NJ if anyone has recommendation of where to go for this please post. Thanks!

do it yourself first. it'll give u a better feeling of how things are put together. the more work u do yourself and learn about the car, the better u feel connected to it. i would really try it, remove the console and trace the cd changer cable. u also need to remove the center speaker behind the seat.. easy really, remove the bulk head garnish cover piece. then u'll see what u need to remove..

good luck

guys, he's only got 2 posts up and you're already quoting him a "$2,600" cassette console replacement come on! His wallet is still freshly raped... give him a break!!!

^^ which is y i told him to try and fix it first. i'm all for fixing first, if u can't then look at alternative..
he should know not to buy new radio from the dealer. well, unless u got deep pocket.

where is this guy anyway??

Thanks for the enthusiasm guys! This is by far one of the best "forum" in my experience.
Obviously I am located at Princeton. Given my wife is already giving me xxx on getting the NSX as a "fun" car, I asked about just getting professionals only because she won't be happy if I am at the garage working on the car the entire weekend (I changed the trunk strut, which is supposed to be "easy" took me the entire Sunday morning due to lack of tech skill on my part).
Having said that, I am actually up for the challenge. I know several guys gave me part numbers, but it would help me and others who are trying what I do if someone could list the exact parts (aftermarket or oem) needed to fit an aftermarket single-DIN stereo, something simple (need to dumb it down for me). Reason being I can't have the car apart in the garage for multiple weekends (obviously, wife factor) so I rather have all the parts in place first before I take the car apart so I won't be missing a part middle of the process.

Thanks again! This is helpful.

well, i would advice against going with Single din or Double Din aftermarket stereo. Why? because it requires a good stereo shop to cut and modify your console to fit it. Most people on here prefer to keep the original console the way it is..stock clean look.

but if u do insist on going this route, here is what you will need.
1. Stereo of your choice (crutchfield.com is a great place to look)
2. SOS (scienceofspeed.com) Single Din bracket
http://scienceofspeed.com/products/...ScienceofSpeed/stereo_bracket_kit/single_DIN/
3. SOS aftermarket to factory wire harness (if u plan on keeping stock speakers and amp that its)
http://scienceofspeed.com/products/...d/ProFormance_Audiophile/stereo_wire_harness/
4. ScienceofSpeed Composite Center Console if you plan on keeping your stock console from getting hack up.
http://scienceofspeed.com/products/.../NSX/ScienceofSpeed/composite_center_console/

so you're looking at roughly: all minus SHIPPING and Handling charge.
$250 for sos console
$48 for sos single din bracket
$29.50 for sos stereo harness
$150+ for aftermarket stereo

so about $477.50 or more.. Then u gotta add in Labor from the shop to cut, fit, and paint the console..

NSX don't have aftermarket stereo installation kit like majority of car out there on the road.. so you're outta luck..

so from that u can have a pretty good generalized idea of how much to spend and what need to be done.

alternatively u can choose this:
USA Spec iPod / iPhone Adapter from SOS: $139.50
http://scienceofspeed.com/products/interior_performance_products/NSX/USASpec/

or

http://www.gromaudio.com/store/all-mbus.html

hook that up to the back of your stock radio by plugging it into the cd changer port.. (unplug cd changer cable, plug in grom audio adapter) then u can use your stock radio to control your Ipod, Iphone.. etc..etc..

here is a great thread to go over if u decide on an adapter.

good luck

Having similar cd changer problems... Last year cd jamming problems that i was able to fix, just got the car out for the season and seems like no power at all to the changer.....

Not a separate fuse for the changer is there?? Kinda wanted to keep the car factory... Any ideas???

Thanks. I actually trace the cable and found the cable was loose therefore the CD changer stopped working... simply reconnect it and it works now!
I notice the CD changer skips easily and takes a very long time to change to the next CD, but works.

After looking through all the suggestions and post, I think it would be best to keep the center console stock, as that is the whole point of why I got a stock NSX to start out with.

But, with the CD changer skipping so much, I am going to take the advice and go for the iPod connector.

Remove the cartridge and make sure there isn't a cd jammed inside. Then unplug the changer for about 60 sec and plug it back in. That should do a reset on the changer. Hopefully that's all it needs.
