extra storage in front tire compartment

Eddie keeps his ninchas in there, I have a shortie baseball bat in the front in case I can't get to my trunk.
Get a custom sheet metal case made and bolt it in.
Maybe there is one out there already that will just slip in, I will keep my eyes out now that you want one.
Maybe Mary Kay has something, I will check my collection.

Has anyone used the spare tire space as storage?

It is a great place to store a pot roast as you take that drive to Laguna Seca. It should be ready by the time you get to Seattle!

Since the area is behind the radiator it is going to be hot, you don't want to store anything in there that cannot take some heat.

Wish I was going on that one too, sure sounds like a lot of fun.

If you made an air deflector that pushed the radiator exhaust air down under the car it might work. The NSX-R does this same thing, only it pushes the air up and out the opening in the hood.

Brad, all we need here is an aluminum box with hinged lid and latches.
Any good sheet metal shop can make this to fit the space.
I would have done it already but I like my spare and run the stock rims with no fancy pantz bling bling wheels like Pamela.
There is lots of room for the air off the rad to get by in my best opinion.
Also, one could have a wing nut tie in system at the bottom of the box that is easy to undo and take the box out at the track.
My sheet metal guy is slammed right now, but over winter I should make one for Pam, its the least I could do.

I should have a look at the other midships and their design. Probably won't get a look at the Boxster but the Toyota MR2 has a little storage area there. How hot does it really get there ... maybe I'll duct tape a meat thermometer to the wheel brace before I go out today ;)

Modern Porsches (996/997, 986/987) all have surprisingly large, fully carpeted front 'trunks.' One of my friends sticks a 20gal Rubbermaid tote in there to haul his track gear in his Cayman S. The only 'mechanical' things you can get to are like the CD changer and brake reservoir, and those are behind panels.

I know ... the first one I saw shocked me. The owner didn't know what kind of motor he had so when we went to take a look all you could see was a dipstik! Tons of storage room, but they are larger cars than ours.

My Diablo also had the carpeted sealed trunk/boot at the front.

Although absolutely no rear trunk/boot lol!!

This musta been a 986 Boxster, since the 987 doesn't have a dipstick. I think the 986 even comes with a spare tire. I don't recall seeing one in any of my friends' 987s.

With spare and spare-holder removed a 12-quart Sterilite plastic container like shown below (from Wal-Mart) without lid fits well in that space.

Among other items, it makes a good place for things like jugs of oil/coolant. This config will hold two gallons of Honda pre-mix coolant + a 5-qt jug of Mobile1 - and you don't have to worry about them leaking in your trunk/interior. I wouldn't be worried about the heat with general items like clothing (obviously in something like a zippered bag, not loose), plastic, metal, wood, etc. as long as they don't block airflow too much or could shift and get into the radiator fans' blades. Obviously not a good place for things that would melt in a hot car in the sun (candles, ice cream) and temp-sensitive food (milk, produce).

sounds simple enough ... I should be able to accomplish that myself. Thank you

I have (though have not used) an aluminum RM storage box that fits in this area. It was available when they were still in business. I know others who have it store all sorts of things in it. I can take a picture of it if you'd like. :)
