Has anyone found a good high quality external thermometer. I have the usual cheapie with a wired probe. I'm really looking for a wireless remote sensor and a decent looking display (or maybe built into a rear view mirror). Any ideas?

I have one in a car that I bought used. It works pretty good.
I have no idea what the relevance of temperature is in California? The year around forecast: temperature 75F +/- 15, sunny and smoggy.
As for a compass: Few of Los Angeles streets or freeways line up with compass readings. In fact, North/South 101 freeway goes East and West (true)...the 210 goes east and west, but not really from the POV of the compass.
