Hey guys, I am curious of how people's experience with painting their Black tops to match the body colors on the early 90s NSX. I went to a body shop the other day and asked how much they would charge to do so and they discouraged me from doing because most likely the paint will chip off the top because of its material. Any experiences???

Painted my whole car this spring incl. the top.

No problem - looks awesome !

A problem you could experience when painting only the top, would be a slight difference in colour/finish, depending on your cars colour and age of paint.

Trond.

A proper paint job will be the equal of the factory finish. The color can be matched exactly too - time to find a new body shop! I've seen several including Mark Basch's and they can be perfect.

Hey Tobal, I see you're in the Bay Area - talk to LiteSpeeds - he had his done & when I asked him for BS (No people, that's BodyShop!!!

)reference he highly recommended shop where he had it done.
You can find his contact info if you look under Northwest forum & tint shop (that's his business too if you're interested)

This is really subjective, but I personally really like the black top on my white NSX, and have had several people comment on it as well. I've thought about painting it (and there are several good-looking painted tops out there), but I find that at least on my NSX, I like the original black better.

My two cents,
Aaron

I've thought about painting the top on my 91 silver NSX but decided not to. I still like the black top better. The other reason is the condition of the paint on my top is perfect and I just don't want to ruin a perfect factory paint job. I'm also skeptical of repaints and prefer to keep all the paint on the car original.

White NSX with black top, classic NSX-R color scheme! Awesome!

I agree.

I thought about painting my top when I first bought it but now Im glad I didnt. Give it some time you may just change your mind =)

They are bringing the black top back..I have seen 02 (pictures ) with Black Tops..

good luck with your decision..

Ask NetViper about this, as his car WAS a 2 tone black top white 93 in its previous life, but had been repainted to match the color of the body before he took possesion of it.

Hello everyone,
I had my top painted at Brooks Motor Cars in Oakland. They are one of the top body shops in the area. If you ever get a chance, stop on by and check out their shop. The owner, Dan Kim, is a very nice guy. Just tell him that I referred you there.
Here is my 2 cents. If your car is perfect, with the original paint job that is in excellent condition, I would keep it the same. My car had a few areas painted so I didn't even hesitate to paint the top to match as this transforms the appearance of your car to look like a newer model. From what I have heard, the NSX factory paint job has a 17 step paint process. Please correct me if I am wrong. Here are 2 pictures of my car, with the top black and with it painted. You be the judge of which looks better. Your input is much appreciated. Thanks!

I agree. The same color roof looks 'newer' than the 2 tone. But if the original paint on the 2 tone looks clean as it can be, then I say leave it alone until you needed one. My .02.

I think the black top looks better because it emphasizes the smooth lines of the body below the roofline.

Here's Jonathan's photo that illustrates this nicely:

It's a 27 step paint process, as described here.

Hey Sid,

This is Rey A. At this point I am a not to picky. You know I like the original black top... but would paint it as you did if the car was not so perfect. They both look sweet to me!

Hey Rey,
Did you pick up your NSX yet? Stop on by with her if you did. Would love to check it out.
As with any NSX, it looks great with either a black or color matched roof. My main point is: If the original paint job is perfect, leave it alone. If parts of the car has been painted and you want your car to have an UPDATED look, then paint it. Brooks Motor Cars charge around $900 for the job. If anyone wants to see their work, just stop on by my shop in San Leandro. I usually drive my NSX to work on Saturdays. Please call me anytime at (510)483-8468 and leave a message if I am not around.

Thanks NSXTACY for correcting me. I remembered it was something like 17 or 27 step paint process but for some reason I thought it was 17.

Hey Sidney
Maybe I'm biased, I like the black roof better
wink.gif

Might stop by & see you & your car on Saturday - maybe even have you do my windows! Put your best man on my car!
(Do I need an apptmnt.?)
What tint % is on your car BTW? (is your windshield done too???) Where's your shop at - know you're in San Leandro, but where?

If you have a half-hour spare, maybe we can take a quick drive over to Brooks & you can introduce me to Dan. (I'll be doing the bumpers at both ends & skirts)

Even in the side by side, above, I think the black top has a nicer look, although for the Targa tops it makes some sense to have a matched top and pillars.

Hello Sidney and everyone,

I've seen Sidney's car and he did do a good job matching the rest of his car. Sidney also tinted all my cars since 1989, so I say he's highly recommended for window tinting. For those of you who want someone else on the South bay area, I also know of another top notch body shop in San Mateo (Williams Auto Body: 650-572-1800) that does "Z" car restoration painting for Scott Performance. Just let William know that I refered you. He has also done many Japanese Spec ITR frontend conversions. I have had 2 complete paint jobs from him and I have to say that his craftsmanship is superb. I currently have my NSX over there for a repaint. The previous owner live in Los Angeles and commutes to the Bay Area S.F. 3 times a week for the past 4 years and boy was there a lot of rock chips. Here are the 2 cars he has painted for me. My Generation 1 Integra was paint over 6 years ago and this photo was taken last weekend. The Supra has been painted 3 years ago and the photo of that was take about 9 months ago before I sold it.

If I am not mistaken, Brooks Motors Cars is closed on the weekends. They are open M-F. I would be more than happy to introduce you to Dan. Just let me know which Monday or Friday that you are available. You can call me at (510)483-8468.
I will have another NSX to tint on Saturday 21st. If you want to stop on by that day, I should be able to tint your car too. I will personally work on your car as well as all exotic cars. Not that I don't trust my guys but I want the credit when someone compliments you on the tint job 8^)

My windshield is not tinted. Just looks darker because there is less light entering into my car.

If you are in the East Bay, go see Brooks Motor Cars. If you are in the Peninsula, go to Williams Auto Body. I have personally examined Jackson's Integra and Supra custom paint job and it looks GREAT! Just contact either one of us if you plan on doing any paint work. We will be more than happy to introduce you to the bodyshop owners.

I remember when I was planning on painting my top and asked a bunch of my friends which they prefer. After taking a poll of about 15 people, if I remember right, 11 of them told me to keep the top black. After I painted it, 9 of them told me that my car looked better. When I see that silver NSX photo with the F-16, I like the top black as it makes the car look like it has a cockpit like the F-16. Most people who sees the car will never associate an NSX with a F-16 so when they look at the car, they probably wonder why it is two-toned. Also when I see the black tops, it kind of reminds me of Camaro's. From what I heard, when Acura first came out with the NSX, Chevy purchased several of them and dissected them to learn about it. If you look at the Camaro's, you can see some similarities. The bottom line, it all comes down to personal taste. I LOVE RED SPORTSCARS. Have owned several black cars in my life and would never get one again. Not to say I don't like black cars, but it gets too hot and is very hard to keep clean. Again, that is my opinion.

For the person who started the thread, go with your gut instinct/first impression. If you like the cockpit/stealth look, stick with a black top. If you like an updated look, paint it to match. Just make sure you bring it to a reputable bodyshop!

Thanks everyone for the input. i guess i'm going to stick with the black top unless anything happens to my car in the future i'll consider the paint job. But Sidney sounds like you're like a pretty amazing person, definetly would like to hook up sometimes. Maybe for a tint job too as well =)
