exhuast sounds, which one sounds closest to F1?

Dave,

I am still skeptical and will remain so until you actually achieve it. Its great you are doing all of this research and footwork and I will be the first to swallow my words if you do it. I'm in Charlotte so I might have to check out the final product in person. Good luck! :)

Billy

Billy,

You're right in that piston speed, piston/cylinder head shape, camshaft profile, compression, AFR, timing, firing order, engine displacement, and exhaust piping material/diameter all play a part in how the final product will sound.

However, these are all mostly secondary effects, with the primary exhaust sound being generated by the engine cylinder count and RPM.

I have a feeling a lot of people are going to remain skeptical as I probably won't be able to prove it

Dave

I would think firing order/engine configuration is a big influence too - i.e. V vs flat vs. inline, cross-plane vs flat-plane crankshafts, header design, etc.

Definitely, of the secondary parameters I previously listed, firing order and flat-plane/cross-plane designs have the biggest impact. But since only a few cars have flat-planes, I didn't include that in the list above.

Flat plane engine firing orders are ideal for exhaust scavenging and first order balance. However, for our cross-plane engines (which are ideal for second order balance), we have to balance firing order with crankshaft stresses and intake/exhaust breathing.

Good points.

I'm not sure if I agree with simplifying it down to just cylinder count and RPM as the main factors. I think its a lot more complex with the firing order, displacement, block and head design being significant factors.

If cylinder count and RPM were the main factors, a NASCAR motor sponning in excess of 9,500 RPM should sound more like an F1 car than a E92 M3, Carrera GT, M5 or Gallardo spinning to 8,500 (which sound more like an F1 car)

Meh on the technobable.

Forget F1 sounds. There are CDs you can buy and play in your stereo if you want that sound. Now, if someone could make an NSX sound like 355, I'd be happy with that!

For those of you who have aftermarket exhaust, which one sounds the most (if possible ) like the formula 1 cars exhaust? My Taitec GT006 lightweight exhaust with Taitec headers is definitely loud, but lower pitch. I'm looking for that F1 sound, just wondering if anyone knows. Thank you.

Yes, I think it's possible . This brand didn't make any exhaust for NSX, but it's possible to customize it to fit on NSX. (cut and Re-welding the connectors. tips, and hangers )
It's called "Capristo Exhaust". You could hear the exhaust note from YouTube. ^_^ (I hope that you are not using laptop speakers)<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

I'm not too familiar with NASCAR exhaust. Don't they use boom tubes? NASCAR sounds like crap IMO.

Kreissieg are the MASTERS of F1 sound.

^ What Ponyboy said. +1

Uncorked Gallardos, BMW M5 V10s, Carrera GTs, and even the E90/E92 V8 M3 have this piston speed & cylinder count to get a "Formula 1" sound. The NSX just wont because it dosn't have comparable either. Uncorking it just makes it louder. Same characteristic, same soul, just louder.

Thats just wrong. Uncorked is louder yes, but more F1? no.

"Uncorked" or straight pipes on a Diablo VT:

Kreissig VT F1-mode Diablo VT:

Right there is the actual difference the right exaust tuning makes for the sound and its pretty obvious which setup sounds the most "F1".

GT-DESIGN INT'L GT-Extreme NSX exhaust.

Case-closed! :D

It's now offered by RF Yamamoto (formerly of GT-One / GT-ROM), now known as the "GT Exhaust V1."

Depends on the series. Have you heard them in person?

The Diablo has the cylinder count/piston speed to be altered to get that characteristic. I was saying you probably can't get the same result out of the NSX because it doesn't have either. It would be difficult to make the STI's opposed- 4cyl motor sound like an F1 car as well. A lot has to do with the inherent design of the motor. Exhaust tuning can alter but can't change the fundamental design.

Fundamentally, the flat crank helps a lot with the F1 sound. A 90 deg. crank, like all the NASCAR engine, can never achieve the high pitch sound you are looking for even at 9500+ rpm. Sure it sounds loud, raw and different and such but it still sounds like 1960 and it just can't bark.

However, I don't think nor recall a V6 can use a flat crank design.

The BELL CANTE F1 exhaust for the NSX is the closest to a high pitch f1 car

The cats have to be deleted on that car....That sounded like my car with the GTLW catless...got booted from LRP for ^^^ decebel
