Exhaust loudness question

Ok here's my story, (you may have seen a glimpse on the parts for sale board, but I'm not 100% sure what I want to do so here goes, sorry). I put the DC Sports exhaust on my 94 the other day. It fit up great, and looks really cool, but it's just "not that loud". In the FAQ's it is listed as a "loud" exhaust, which is what I was looking for (I was going to get a Taitec JGTC parallel from SOS, which I still most likely will). In case it matters I have put about 35 miles or so it from 3 driving trips. My main question is, Is it going to get louder as I put a few miles on it? Is there some kind of break in period or should it have been loud out of the box if it was going to be loud? Is there anything I should do to it to help it along? Thanks in advance as I would hate to go through all the trouble of taking it off and selling it if I can avoid it.

Could you get electronic cut-outs? Makes the exhaust much louder. A lot of the Camaros do this. Cheap way to make the exhaust loud

Most exhausts do get marginally louder with time. However, even a well-seasoned DC Sports Exhaust is not loud by my standards. Chris at Science of Speed has a good exhaust comparison chart on his site. The chart has ratings for idle volume and volume at WOT for most NSX exhaust options.

But, unfortunately, the DC Sports exhaust is not listed.

I know exactly what your talking about! I first purchased a Comptech exhaust for my '92, but it just wasn't "Loud" enough for me. I am one of those guys that really likes to hear those V-8 Mustangs and Corvettes take off just to hear that deep rumble. So, I sold my Comptech and on the advice of Larry Garcia (NSX Modified) I looked and found a Supertrapp Competition exhaust ($200.00 total with new canisters!). Man what an awsome exhaust! People always come up to me to tell me just how good my car sounds. And when I tell them it's only a V-6, they don't believe me. Now, I do sometimes get that dirty look from police, but I guess that goes with the territory of having such a flashy car, but with a loud exhaust, I guess it makes people notice it even more. Good Luck!

Here's a solution for ya...

Wrap a microphone with aluminum foil. Then use duct tape to secure the microphone to the exhaust tip/opening. Connect the microphone to a (or multiple) loud speaker. Secure the speaker(s) to your NSX and voila! If ya want it loud, turn up the speaker(s)... If ya want it quite power off the speaker(s)...

Anyone who's been around my car knows just how loud it is ... the only thing I want to comment on regarding this post, is that loud may "sound" cool... but over a period of time you may find that its just more annoying than its worth.

My exhaust is loud as hell... when Im 1/2 a mile away from the NSX gathering in NorCal once a month, they can hear me coming, they can hear me pass on the freeway, they can hear me getting off the offramp, they can hear me for a LONG distance...

Just think about what you do with your NSX. Do you ever listen to the radio? Do you prefer nice, sporty drives while maintaining the "luxery" feel of the car, ie: quiet?

Do you care what your neighbors think? Mine KNOW when I leave and come home in my NSX... Ive even started accelerating on the major street, 2 streets away, then throwing it out of gear and "gliding" onto my street and into my driveway just to avoid the noise level, especially at night.

Anyways

if you're cost concious and don't feel like changing your exhaust again if its too loud, think before you leap.

You want loud? Get headers and bypass pipes. I'm wishing my exhaust was quieter.

I agree, I've got the dc exhaust and if you want lowder, but still not obnoxious remove the cats.

When I first bought my NSX I picked up a used RM Racing DTM tipped Exhaust and it was no where near loud enough for me. Then I bought DC Headers and it was a little louder and it did feel like it had a little more UMPF to it still not loud enough. Finally I got a set of Taitec by-pass Pipes and O.M.G this system is loud I mean LOUD!!!

I had a supertrapp too (swapped it for a stock exhaust) and that sucker was LOUD. It was hard for me to carry on a conversation in the car, even during highway cruising. People knew I was coming from VERY far away.

It's sitting in my garage now, if someone wants to take it off my hands...

If you're considering a Supertrapp you should think it through pretty carefully IMO:

1. Do you need to go through a state inspection? The inspectors will scratch their heads over where to put the probe!
2. The Supertrapp is *super* loud and attracts a lot of negative attention.
3. The sound can be tuned slightly by the number of plates that are used. No matter, it is still too loud, IMO, for anyone who lives in a normal neighborhood.
Disclaimer: My personal experience of a Supertrapp system is non-NSX but applies to a gen 1 MR2 IMSA Firehawk car.

how loud can loud possibly be?? the way you guys are describing some of these neighbor bothering setups, i just dont understand.

im running an HKS exhaust with CT headers and bypass pipes and yes its Loud, but its not wake up the neighbors or listen to me coming 1/2 mile off *LOUD* unless im up pretty high in the RPMs.

i've been to several northeast events where several people have done "listen to how loud my exhaust is" type comparisons and as far as i know i think i still hold the distinction of loudest. thus i can not understand some of the descriptions in here. i mean, really how much louder can it get without running open headers.

ps, no HKS exhaust on the exhaust comparison page either :P.

1) I had the CA smog inspection with no problem.

2) Did I mention this thing was loud?

3) Did I mention that these things have a history of having the filling clog up and build massive backpressure unless you replace it with steel wool?

2a) Did I mention this thing was loud?

Anyone still want this thing?

p.s. did i mention this thing is loud?
