it seems like i have an excessive amount of heat emitting from under my dash. while driving with the windows open on a relatively warm day i really noticed it. where could this be coming from? even though the heater is off, does the heater core still generate heat that you can feel? maybe from the radiator?

If your vents are open, it can be letting warm air in from outside, even if it's turned off.
If you press the recirculate button it will close off the vents entirely. Try that.
Another option - if you want fresh air that is not cooled with the air conditioning - is to turn the ventilation on but press the A/C button so it says A/C OFF. You can set the temperature to 60 degrees and it may not be cooling the air (if the A/C is off) but it won't be heating it, either.
Of course, you can always turn the A/C on, too...
